Right firmware for a fake Alcor Chip (IDE 5019sn)

$

Hey guys, it's me again

I bought a cheap ass 64MB flash drive for 50 cents on ebay and thought that I can play a little bit with it.

Here is the chipgenius report :

Description: [E:]USB-Massenspeichergerät(Generic USB Flash Disk)

Device Type:        Mass Storage Device

Protocal Version: USB 2.00
Current Speed: High Speed
Max Current: 100mA

USB Device ID: VID = 058F PID = 1234

Device Vendor: Alcor Micro
Device Name: Mass Storage Device
Device Revision: 0001

Manufacturer: Generic
Product Model: USB Flash Disk
Product Revision: 7.76

Controller Vendor: Alcor Micro
Controller Part-Number: AU6989SN-GT/AU6998SN [EC05] - F/W 0084
Flash ID code:      ECDE88BF - Samsung - 1CE/Single Channel [TLC] -> Total Capacity = 8GB

As you can see the controller chip says that it's an Alcor AU6989SN but in reality it's a fake "IDE 5019sn" chip that pretends to be an AU6989SN.

I tried to flash it new with AlcorMP 15.09.15.00 but it gives me an error :

50400: Too many bad block error
Bad block: 2101/2101

I would be thankful for an good advise. :)

Hello SomeBody,

I have a Tablet ASUS Transformer T100HA, and I want to put to Lanscape, but I don't know on Windows 10. With Windows 8.1, I know how, but, in Windows 10, it's different.

Thanks for a Reply.

Problem in chainloading Grub4DOS from Grub2

I've the following OSes/items present/installed on my system which used to come up in the boot menu till a couple of days back:
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 7
  • Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition
  • Acronis 2011 recovery ISO
  • LENOVO preinstalled recovery environment
  • Grub4DOS command line shell
Here is a screenshot of my HD layout for better understanding:

Posted Image

I built this setup using Ubuntu's Grub2 & Grub4DOS 0.4.5b. What I did was, I installed Grub2 on the MBR. So, it used to take over the control of the booting process from the system startup. I modified it's /boot/grub/grub.cfg file with the entries below:

menuentry "Windows XP Professional"{

set root=(hd0,11)

linux16 /Rescue/grub4dos-0.4.5b/grub.exe --config-file="root (hd0,0);chainloader /ntldr"

}

menuentry "Windows 7 Ultimate"{

set root=(hd0,11)

linux16 /Rescue/grub4dos-0.4.5b/grub.exe --config-file="root (hd0,0);chainloader /bootmgr"

}

menuentry "Acronis TrueImage 2011 Home Edition"{

set root=(hd0,11)

linux16 /Rescue/grub4dos-0.4.5b/grub.exe --config-file="root (hd0,10);map --mem /Rescue/Acronis-2011.iso (0xff);map --hook;chainloader (0xff)"

}

menuentry "Grub4DOS"{

set root=(hd0,11)

linux16 /Rescue/grub4dos-0.4.5b/grub.exe --config-file="(hd0,10)/Rescue/grub4dos-0.4.5b/menu.lst"

}

So, basically you can see that it's a mere chainloading of Grub4DOS from Grub2 & every single option used to work fine. Here is a relevant text extracted from the README of the Grub4DOS version I'm using:

Update: FILE can be the contents of a menu. Use semi-colon
to delimitate the embedded commands here in FILE. The FILE
can be enclosed with a pair of double-quotes. For example:

GRUB --config-file="root (hd0,0);chainloader +1"

This command will boot the system in (hd0,0).

Another example:

GRUB --config-file="reboot"

This command will reboot the machine.

One more example:

GRUB --config-file="halt"

This command will halt the machine.

But alas, since yesterday, the setup stopped working. Naturally what comes up in mind that what has this guy done with the setup? The small amount of fiddling I've done with my system is to just overwrite the Ubuntu 10.10 installation with Zorin OS, an Ubuntu derivative which also employs Grub2 as it's bootloader. I added the same entries as mentioned above to the grub.cfg file, but this time choosing any of my "custom" options is dropping me to the Grub4DOS commandline shell itself. The behavior is the sane when "no" --config-file parameter is passed to Grub4DOS via Grub2. This has made me believe that for *some* the arguments are not being passed properly. But what has made me astonished that the menu entries are well tested & fully working since last eight months at lest. Still I'm scratching my head. You'll feel pity on me if you hear that I'm booting into my Windows by typing

chainloader (hd0,0)/ntldr
boot

from the Grub4DOS commandline every time. BTW, it is not my aim to boot my system by any means but to get it working by chainloading Grub4DOS from Grub2. Any ideas?

Boot into 3rd-party EFI application via BCD?

$

Can someone tell me whether or not it is possible to chainload a non-MS-signed EFI application from the BCD?

I'm attempting to add a GRUB2 EFI build to the BCD, but no matter what I try the bootmgr insists that the application is missing or invalid. Also, it seems to be not possible to chainload a bootsector on an EFI PC - even though you can boot from a USB with that same bootsector.

I can understand the latter (though I would welcome workarounds, if there are any). But why can I not load the GRUB2 EFI application by creating either an application or bootsector app in the BCD w/ the path set to grub2.efi?

grub-mkimage was invoked with -O x86_64-efi

Help customizing grub4dos

$

Hello guys,

I'm struggling trying to find information to customize grub4dos to get a setup similar to grub2 themes.

In particular I have a very simple image 200x200 on grub2 that I place on the upper right corner, aside from the resolution. On grub4dos I found that I can use this line to get a menu that automatically adapt the resolution to the hardware capabilities of the machine:

graphicsmode -1 100:1100 100:1000 24:32

Thing is, if I create a 1024x768 background manually putting the 200x200 image on a static background, the splashimage doesn't resize automatically when the resolution change.

Is there a way to get this kind of effect or is there a way to place the small image on the upper right corner?

Thanks for the help :)

Easy2boot with UDF Flash Drive with imgPTN support?

Is it possible to have it all at once? Current Easy2boot version only support NTFS which has no write support out-of-the -box on macOS and Linux distro, and FAT32 which works out-of-the-box but has 4GB filesize limitation. UDF 2.01 is very attractive because it works out-of-the-box on all major OSs with write support and no 4GB filesize limitation. And imgPTN support? What is the requirement to be able to support that feature?

Possible to use ImDisk/ImDisk Toolkit to cache external HDD reads/writes?

$

So, I have an external 4TB HDD (USB3) that has 1 primary GPT partition. Said partition is encrypted with triple-layered AES/TwoFish/Serpent by VeraCrypt. I also have NTFS compression enabled on the entire filesystem within the partition.

Recently I found a software called FancyCache that can cache reads/writes that are directed toward an HDD, into an SSD. The goal is to boost the HDD speed. I know that ImDisk can create images and ramdisks, etc, giving it much of the functionality of proprietary software, and for free. So I would like to offset the performance hit of encryption and compression. Usually it isn't an issue except sometimes when playing newer games or other high performance software, there is a slight but noticeable lag which wasn't present before. Compression of a file only has a negative effect once, when a file is compressed, all reads to that file thereafter should be around the same speed as uncompressed. I mostly just want to cache reads, and writes to a lesser extent, into either a partition/unallocated space on my SSD, or into RAM.

Can ImDisk do this? If not, are there any free/open source utilities that can accomplish this?

Thanks!

Edit: Write caching (or whatever it's called) is enabled in the drive's properties, for better performance. But it doesn't seem to help much. The volume must be properly unmounted in VeraCrypt anyway or else I risk corruption, so it makes sense that I go the extra mile and safely eject it too (which write caching says is neccessary).

Edit #2: I think a simpler option would be to manually decompress the files/directories of any applications that exhibit lag. But this shouldn't be an issue for static data like ISOs. I have checked on the performance degradation costs of encryption. It seems to be incurred only during the initial encryption process, after that the difference is next to nothing compared to not encrypting. Long ago the hits were significant, but today's modern hardware can more than compensate. My laptop is AES-NI enabled, so that helps. CrystalDiskMark shows only a tiny difference that is discernable, too small to make a real difference. Of course stuff that is newly written will be encrypted on the fly, that might have a small effect. But in practice I haven't noticed any difference. I have already encrypted every byte of the partition in advance.

VirtualBox image (VDI) proxy for ImDisk

Hi,

I had done a few proxies for ImDisk in the past based on the libyal libraries (vmdk, qcow, vhd, ewf).

This time, as the VDI image format is quite simple, I made my own proxy for VDI images.

Imdisk + Discutils could achieve the same except that discutils requires .Net 4.0 which is not always available.

It is an early version (no error handling) and I was able to test dynamic images only.

It supports only "read only" for now but it should easy enough to implement "read write" if requested.

As always the command line :

"server" -> devio --dll=proxy.dll;dllopen shm:test_proxy c:\temp\freedos.vdi
"client" -> imdisk -a -t proxy -o shm -o ro -f test_proxy -m x:
Use the start command in front of devio if you want to stuff it all in one batch.

Regards,

Erwan

PS: Devio should output something similar to the below.

Install and Boot all versions of Windows from VHD using Firadisk

How to make firadisk recognize a sector mapped disk without switching to file backed one?

$
0
0
I want to boot windows with a vhd image which exists in an ext4 partition, I mapped the image file directly, obviously firadisk cannot recognize it, not without necessary information.

And I found that both firadisk and WinVBlock need parameters to assign a path to the sector mapped file, I guess this actually switched to ordinary file backed virtual disk, but my image file is stored in an ext4 partition, there can't be a path of it in windows file system.

I read that Karyonix talked about an idea in WinVBlock main thread, that use BIOS INT13 drive number for identification: http://reboot.pro/topic/8168-winvblock/?p=101439

Another method for backing-disk identification by using INT13 drive number (as seen from NTLDR).
  • Save drive number pair in registry
    key = "whatever\BackingDisk", value = drive number of sector-mapped disk, type REG_DWORD, data = drive number of backing disk.
    example. value "80" data 0x90
  • In GRUB4DOS map backing disk as drive number specified in registry
    map (hd0,0)/aaaa.img (0x80)
    map (hd0) (0x90)
  • When driver read drive map slot, it see drive number 0x80.
    Driver read registry value "80". It get data 0x90 which is drive number of backing disk.
    Driver enumerate all disk on system and send IOCTL_DISK_GET_DRIVE_GEOMETRY_EX to each of them.
    If the returned diskdetectioninfo->DetectionType==DetectInt13 and diskdetectioninfo->DriveSelect == drive number of backing disk, we have found the backing disk.

But I didn't find implementations neither in firadisk nor WinVBlock, and I'm not a native English speaker, reading such a lot of posts is really tough for me, although I've been sitting reading almost half a day, so I decide to ask for help.

Thanks for reading, more if anyone would help. :heh:

Modifying Windows Product/License policies using Grub4Dos

Windows product policy contains a lot of useful settings.

By modifying the Kernel-NativeVHDBoot native VHD boot can be enabled on all unsupported versions of Windows 7.

 Native VHD Boot on unsupported versions of Windows 7

By modifying Kernel-WindowsMaxMemAllowedx86 and Kernel-MaxPhysicalPage to 16384 (from a lower value), 32-bit versions of Windows 7 can potentially access more than 4GB of RAM.

http://reboot.pro/topic/20585-productpolicy-viewer/?p=201389

http://reboot.pro/topic/18593-vhd-w7-compact-make-mini-7/page-4#entry201388

Erwan built an excellent tool called ProductPolicy Viewer to view and Edit the Product Policy Settings. The discussion was first started here - http://reboot.pro/topic/15407-booting-from-vhd-in-grub4dos/?p=193727

A few facts about the Windows Product and License Policy

  1. The settings are stored in the registry at SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions\ProductPolicy
  2. The structure of these settings is not straightforward and is described at http://reboot.pro/topic/20585-productpolicy-viewer/?p=201357 and http://www.remkoweijnen.nl/blog/2010/06/15/having-fun-with-windows-licensing/
  3. The product policy registry key cannot be modified on an online registry hive. The kernel protects it from modification.
  4. Erwan's tool - modifies the product policy on an offline registry hive. The modified values have effect only on the first boot after the modification. On subsequent reboots, the modified settings are lost as the software protection policy restores them from Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ SoftwareProtectionPlatform\tokens.dat .

One option to overcome this problem is to disable the Software Protection Service(sppsvc). However, this causes problems with Windows Activation, installation/uninstallation of Windows Updates etc

Other options include running Windows 7 in RAM, so the changes are not persisted. However not everybody runs Windows from RAM, so it's not feasible - http://reboot.pro/topic/18593-vhd-w7-compact-make-mini-7/page-4#entry201388

Since Grub4dos can edit files using cat, I started investigating and did hex diff between an unmodified system hive and a system hive modified with ProductPolicy Viewer. I found the corresponding hex entries for Kernel-WindowsMaxMemAllowedx86, Kernel-MaxPhysicalPage and Kernel-NativeVHDBoot.

Using my rudimentary grub4dos skills I came up with the below working Grub4Dos entries

Find string will be different for other versions of Windows, the last hex value will change from \x08 to \x10.

\x08 corresponds to 2GB (0x0800 -> 16*16*8 )  while \x10 corresponds to 4GB (0x1000-> 16*16*16)

The menu entries are not entirely bug-free. Since the cat command is restricted to 16 chars, I cannot be very specific about the entries I am finding and replacing.

The entries patching the files inside VHD are very slow and don't work if the files are already patched - the menu just gets stuck. I am not sure why this is happening.

Willing to pay to make boot USB (50$)

Hi everyone,

I'm willing to pay to make a specific USB with easy2boot. Ive been struggling to make this usb for a month and I am tech savvy, but I always get errors and post them here. It seems like every time I post the error it takes alot of time, and the people here help me get past one error, only to go back and encounter a new one. And then you guys suggest something else and something else. And quite frankly, I need this done. Its not something I can spend months on going back and fourth on a forum and asking questions. I want to learn, but I also am stricken by time. I figure I can learn over teamviewer.

I am not just stricken by time but I am also personally annoyed at all the back and fourth I have to do to make a bootable usb, because its always been easy for me, until It came to trying to put multiple ISO's on one usb and selecting the RIGHT options one right after the other, trying to see it on QEMU. Then when Ive read tutorials on a specific PE that I want to put on the USB, its so much information to use programs to make the ISO compatible etc. Its just so much work and I'm so confused and lost.

In other words Ive determined its too difficult to try on my own, and I am very much of the philosophy that I prefer to learn something then to have someone else do it. When you cant learn it on your own, then you need to learn where and how to get help, and so Ive resorted to posting on this forum, and its been very time consuming and frustrating.

So if any of you are willing to help me, please respond.

Good Advice About National Football League Cheat Codes

NFL is wildly popular all over the world. All over the world, people are enjoying the knowledge that can be gained along with the fun. There are lots of games to suit every taste. The following article will teach you some valuable tips and tricks about NFL 17 Coins and how to make the most of your time at it.

Make sure you are aware of game ratings. There are NFL 17 suitable for all ages, not just children; in fact, many of them aren't child-friendly. From EC (three-years old and up) to A or AO (only adults can play), the ratings vary on each game. If you purchase a National Football League for someone else, make sure that it's appropriate for their age.

If buying a game for a kid, make sure you solicit multiple opinions. Many considerations factor into buying games for kids, especially in regards to age appropriate content. So, if you go shopping with only a single title idea, you might find out it is not right.

Make sure you stretch often as you play. Your body gets stuck doing the same motions repeatedly. Additionally, if you sit immobile for long periods of times, you will get cramps and perhaps even blood clots. It will keep you healthy and strong.

You should be leery of playing games online. Occasionally, there will be a monthly fee associated with access. If you have a child who wants to join an online-gaming site, then you should check it out first. Determine if it is free or if the cost is worth it.

Sit down and play some NFL 17 together with your children. You can learn a lot about your children this way. A common interest can create a valuable bond between you and your child. You can also help them develop more and assist them in doing so.

Follow the ESRB guidelines to determine which games can be played by the young members of your family. Check to see if your console or PC has the option to block content meant for adults or older children. It's your job to keep them gaming in a healthy manner.

Play games for no more than a couple of hours daily. Unfortunately, NFL 17 are often highly addictive, so take steps to avoid this happening to you. You shouldn't be gaming for more than a few hours each day. If you will be playing for many hours in a row, make sure that you take lots of little breaks.

Spend some time playing games with your child if you want to connect with them better. Try out the games yourself, watch your kid play, or play the game with them. Ask questions about the game, and show how you are interested in what he's doing. There is no greater teacher than hands-on experience!

When you have a small budget, consider a Playstation 2. Its games cost far less than those made for Xbox and PS3. In addition, you have a wide selection of games to choose from, due to the fact that it's been around so long.

Always find out if the games your children are playing contain material that is suitable for their age. You can check the ratings on the National Football League packaging to guide your selection of an appropriate game. Stay away from violent games for children or it could lead to problems.

Whatever type of specialty interests, you are sure to find a game you love NFL 17 IOS Coins. Read the enclosed advice carefully to enrich your gaming experience. NFL 17 have become a very fun and exciting hobby for people all over the world.

MapleStory 2 are wherever you look now, get the most from them. There aren't that many households out there that don't have at least a single MS2 system. This does not mean you might not need gaming help every once in a while. Apply the ideas within this article to make sure that your MapleStory 2 Meso hobby is at its fullest potential.

Make sure you pay attention to a game's rating when buying a gift. This rating will help you understand what age level the game is most appropriate for and will let you know if the game is violent. It will allow you to figure out if this is a good purchase or not for the person getting it.

If your child's MS2 console goes online, make sure to adjust the settings before they play. You will be able to protect your child from exposure to unsavory content using these filter settings. There are also options to set the levels of chat they can participate with others when online.

Illuminate the screen. Games that have settings in dark caves or buildings may look good, but can negatively effect your performance. It can be very hard to see your enemies in the darkness, giving them the upper hand as they sneak up. Increase the brightness if you do not mind sacrificing a little ambiance. You will then notice the enemy before he has a chance to get you because the colors will be brighter.

Today's MapleStory 2 are both entertaining and educational. Stick to educational titles when buying for children, rather than buy ones full of violence and inappropriate content. Check reviews on the Internet to see which games parents are recommending.

Be aware of the hidden dangers of online gaming. Always to check to see if you will be charged monthly for accessing certain sites. Check out any site your children want to use before you let them sign up. Find out how much the game costs and make sure it is appropriate for your children.

TINY is a set of programs that lets you control a DOS computer from any Java-capable machine over a TCP/IP connection.  It is comparable to programs like VNC, CarbonCopy, and GotoMyPC except that the host machine is a DOS computer rather than a Windows one.

Seems like a really good remote control program. From Linux we can use SSH + screen but hadn't yet seem similar for plain DOS.

Help regarding my bootable USB

Alright everyone, here are the details.

My Operating system is windows 10 64 bit. My USB drive is a Samsung flash drive. Below is the flash drive I bought.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4P03NV6157&cm_re=samsung_32_gb_usb-_-20-147-452-_-Product

My goal is to put Gandalfs windows PE, a few versions (Windows 10, windows 8, windows 7, specifically 32 bit versions so that it works on 64 bit computers as well). I also want to put a few antivirus ISO's (Avira, Kaspersky, bit defender). I want this USB to be able to load while I select from the list what I want to run. Ive been able to accomplish getting one PE on the USB using other programs 9xboot and rufus), but I dont want to buy multiple flash drives for every ISO. I want to be smart about this and thats why I bought a 32 gb flash drive.

This is the website to the windows PE: www.windowsmatters.com

Ive come to the conclusion that the best available software for what I want to do is Rmprep combined with easy2boot.

Ive put the Gandalfs pe in the PE folder of easy2boot. I opened up Rmprep and selected FAT32 and HDD option.

Here are some instructions I found from the Easy2boot website regarding my ISO specifically. I had trouble going through the process. (control+F, type gandalf)
