Hello,
I was looking at the recent announcement of the Raspberry Pi Zero, which costs something like 5 GBP per board and got wondering what else was available in terms of small computer boards reduced to bare minimum.
One detail of Pi zero is the single-threaded CPU running at 1Ghz. That's not bad for something that costs less than a pizza. An interesting possibility is to create a computer cluster with inexpensive boards of this type but when looking at projects existing with the Pi, you need some 12 of them (or similar) to reach similar computation level of a laptop.
So what is there of interest? After looking around for some days found the ODROID boards.
The most recent model is the ODROID C1+ that comes equipped with a 1,5Ghz quad-core CPU, a gigabit network port and few other peripheral ports at a whooping price of 37 USD.
The processor is ARM, meaning that Linux, FreeDOS and related operating systems can run on this board. Interesting enough, also learned of a special Windows 10 edition made available for the ARM. On this case, I'd just use the Linux version and figure out how to make a few of these boards to work together to crunch data faster than a single machine.
Website for these boards is found at http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G143703355573
It seems possible to order directly from their site, or if you prefer, from a local store in your country albeit with a bit extra cost on the retail price.

This is a simple GUI to FSCTL_GET_RETRIEVAL_POINTERS .
The idea is to read all clusters belonging to file, then map these clusters on the logical drive where this file is located, and from there re assemble all clusters and save them to a new destination file.
Thanks to this method, one can save/copy a file which is in use since we "raw" read clusters from a logical drive.
This has been tested with success on \boot\bcd and \windows\system32\config\sam .
Files which you cannot copy in a normal mode.
zip file contains source file next to the binary.

imdisk persistent?
@echo off if not exist t:\ ( imdisk -a -s 6144M -m t: -p "/fs:ntfs /q /y" label t: g-ramdisk )
That's my startup script started via tasksched.
An interesting observation... when I shutdown this windows 10 pc, and then start up. files still reside in t:\ from previous boot. Weird?! Where are the files being saved to?
HOWEVER, when i reboot, yes, the drive seems to be recreated... (empty disk)

Use ImDisk API from Python
Hi everyone. I'd like to use ImDisk from a Python program. Under Windows, Python allows to load C DLLs using a module called "ctypes", which is very powerful.
However, ImDisk seems to provide only COM and .NET DLLs for API access (which I cannot use from Python that easily). Is it possible to compile a "normal" C-only DLL (i.e. a DLL with a bunch of 'extern "C"' exported functions)? If so, how? I'm a bit familiar with MSVS, but it seems the source code projects won't open at all in MSVS, and just the console-only nmake is used for compilation.
Cheers!

Force limited user rights using minlogon ?
Minlogon is great because of its small footprint and the fast logon.
From a security perspective it's not that great because you are running on the system account with admin rights.
It would be nice to find a mod/hack that allows to run as a normal user using minlogon.
Can anyone think about a way to do this ?

Easy2Boot cant install Ubuntu alongside Windows
Hey,
i have two problems with ubuntu and Easy2Boot.
1. Have converted the 64-Bit Ubuntu 15.10 Image as .imgPTN. After booting that image via UEFI i see the grub minimal shell window. Ubuntu is not booting.
2. Installing Ubuntu in BIOS mode doesnt work either because Ubuntu doesnt find a Windows Bootloader. So i cant select the option "install ubuntu alongside Windows Bootloader".
Thanks,
JimboV
Please help me learning how grub/syslinux work
I try to be short.
I made a usb stick with 2 iso (loaded as grub4dos iso image emulation).
They work correctly.
Then, I want to rename one of the isos: from "pmagici686.iso" to "pmagic.iso". So i rename the file in \images folder and the name of the iso in text files \menu.lst and \boot\syslinux\syslinux.cfg.
Surprisingly it does NOT work anymore correctly: Parted Magic loads, it extracts some files, then it hangs during extraction of PMAGIC_2013_05_01.SQFS, that cannot find. For the same reason i cannot simply add isos and manually modify the menus.
The question is: why it hangs simply due to renaming the file??? If the iso has been found and started as it did before, it should go until the end of the loading.
What am I forgotting?
Thank you.
Registry adding
Hi, i am trying add a key to the registry to stop all the WIN+ Keyboard Shortcuts (Hotkeys).
In normal windows you would create a notepad file with .reg and the lines:
After rebooting you can not access the windows shortcuts.
I added the following lines:
With this code the key ends up in 3 places:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
Can anyone suggest a solution?
The whole idea is to create a USB3 WinPE that you can only access a couple off apps from the desktop and shut down afterwards. No access to Windows Explorer.
Thank you

Is 512MB the default size for an ImDisk ramdisk?
I think I'm missing something. I discovered ImDisk a while back and grabbed it happily. I started using ramdisks in MSDOS in the 80s, and I was delighted to find an open source ramdisk driver for Windows that ran in my 64bit Win7 environment. I recently upgraded to the 2.0 build.
The first disk I created was a 512MB NTFS device, and it worked fine. But I discovered that I needed a larger one, so I deleted the original and created a new one with a gigabyte of space. It worked fine.
When I shut down and rebooted, the ImDisk ramdisk was there, but it was 512MB. I haven't seen anything in the docs that indicates 512MB is the default size. If the driver is going to remember a drive existed after a reboot, shouldn't it remember the size of the previously existing drive?
(I'm not concerned with preserving the content. ImDisk is used for browser profiles and cache. Those are loaded from Zip files on the hard drive when Windows boots, and the Zip files are updated on shutdown from the ramdisk by scripts that run on boot and shutdown.)
I've read the FAQ, and I know I can create a drive of the desired size from Windows scheduler. That's the next step. I'm just curious about the current behavior.

linux or windows as thin client?
Hello,
The last week I have been playing/messing around with linux distro ISOs and PXE booting.
While ThinStation looked very promising, fast and worked fine as the live CD example
I'm not able to build one that connects to the LAN.
Something is wrong or missing in the installer/build tool.
I read here that there are a lot of lightweight windows versions aswell.
So I was wondering if it would be a good alternative to have a lightweight windows with only the RDP client installed?
I read about ThinPC but it seems to be too bloated for what it is.
Please move it to the right subforum if it doesn't below here.
Password vulnerability in GRUB2
JFYI:
http://hmarco.org/bugs/CVE-2015-8370-Grub2-authentication-bypass.html
A vulnerability in Grub2 has been found. Versions from 1.98 (December, 2009) to 2.02 (December, 2015) are affected. The vulnerability can be exploited under certain circumstances, allowing local attackers to bypass any kind of authentication (plain or hashed passwords). And so, the attacker may take control of the computer.
Cannot say if a similar approach could be used to compromise a grub4dos (at least in some versions), and of course, with all due respect for the good guys that discovered the vulnerability, I don' t think that anyone ever considered the password mechanism to be "fail proof" and actually uses it as a security measure.

Fast bootable alternative to DBAN
I'm looking for a fast bootable solution to format all the fixed drives in a machine. I managed to edit the DBAN image to automatically autonuke using the quick methd but it still takes like 2 hours at best, and I was thinking of something like 2 minutes or such. I do not care about data recoverability, not looking for secure wiping, just a quick wipe, like windows does.
Thank you.
ImDisk 2.0.9
Fixed serious issue. Attempts to create larger physical memory RAM disks than allowed by amount of free memory could cause blue-screen crash.
Is this a new bug or something that always existed?
