Rii i8+ Review (Upgraded Version!)

http://www.cordcuttersnews.com/upgraded-rii-i8-wireless-mini-keyboard-review/

The Rii i8 has been a popular wireless mini keyboard and now there is a updated version. The update is a huge improvement over the old i8 version with the new i8+ that brings better battery life and minor but noticeable improvements to the layout and touch pad.

There is a built in auto turn off to save battery power. This auto off feature greatly improves the battery life without having to remember to turn off the keyboard during the movie.

  • driver integration, either auto, or manual while running PE, ends in PE freeze\hang.
Copying stuff in this case didn't help, and the same drivers work without a problem in "standard" package.

Hallo,
the Gavotte Ramdisk (i think its based on MS SDK sample driver) allows 'Ramdisk' mediatype (beside fixed drive). What's the difference and why doesn't ImDisk support it?

Every fixed drive data has to be copied to another ram area first, right?. Is this also true for 'Ramdrive' flagged media types?

new feature for hotkey utility for grub4dos

chenall has added a new feature to the hotkey utility

If you use

/hotkey -A

then the user can jump to any menu entry by typing it's first (initial) letter.

To use the special grub4dos command keys p, c, e and b you must hold down the SHIFT key first (even if CAPS LOCK is on).

You will need to latest version of grubdos 0.4.6a for it to work properly.

Note: 0.4.5c is not yet up to date (9 character variables don't work in 2015-04-08 version)

0.4.6a seems pretty robust now and I use it as the default versions for E2B. I recommend you use 0.4.6a now as it has many improvements over 0.4.5c

alve,
sempre da bootmed ho eseguito questa guida piu' o meno Troubleshooting Basic Hard Drive Problems: You Need to Format the Disk

Is there any way to enable 'Hibernate' in Dual VHD/VHDX Booting of 'Win 10 TP' ?

Hello Everyone.......

I am using Dual Boot (WIMBoot + VHDX) of 'Win 10 TP' in my system. And everything is working just perfect except 'Hibernate and Sleep'. I can not compromise with 'Hibernate' features because I rarely shutdown my PC in a Week.

Is there any Way/Trick/Hack/Tweak by which I can enable 'Hibernate' in case of Dual VHD Booting ?

Is it possible to have common 'pagefile.sys' and 'hiberfill.sys' in the root of partition which contains VHDX files ?

/BOOTMGR

/Boot/BCD

/Win 10 TP.vhdx

/Win X TP.vhdx

/install.wim

/BOOTNXT

/pagefile.sys

/hiberfill.sys

Is it possible to implement above configuration ? If 'Yes', then Will it enable 'Hibernate' in Dual VHD Booting ?

Please feel free to suggest me any other alternative (if possible) in order to enable 'Hibernate' in Dual VHD Booting..

Thanks & Regards....

Win 7 transfer migrate to Win8.1 Laptop: SysPrep Generalize v/s Disk2VHD or both?

With regard to licensing/ activation:
I will figure out what to do and will obtain that from my contacts at Microsoft.
If you have any suggestions on that given these are 'unique' transfers, please do suggest what might work and I can ask my connects at MS.

Goal:

1) TRANSPLANT existing [Win7 SP1 Ultimate][Thinkpad Drivers] FROM OLD [Thinkpad Laptop][SLIC 2.1 Enabled]
IMPLANT TO NEW [Toshiba Laptop][Win 8.1 Preinstalled] maintain Preinstall

2) Enable Native Dual Boot on [Toshiba Laptop] for both:
[Win7 SP1 Ultimate]
[Win 8.1 Preinstalled]
(What would you use/ choose for dual boot?)

2 PATHWAYS AS LISTED BELOW:
- Please guide on proper steps to do both or one/ do advise?
- How are they different from each other and what/how do they manage device drivers/ sanitize drivers?
- Or do we need to use both? HOW? Thoughts (Googled both together.. lots of links)

PATH A. SysPrep Generalize Windows 7 to OOBE = [Win7 SP1 Ultimate][Minus OLD Drivers]

Windows 7 System Preparation Tool is a powerful, native Windows tool. When for instance used in so called Audit Mode, it let's you to freely configure Windows 7 to be then deployed to other computers as hardware independent image.

In this tutorial we use System Preparation Tool (sysprep) to prepare your Windows 7 installation to be moved to a new computer, keeping all your installed applications, program settings and user profiles. You can use this method for instance when you have bought a new PC and want to transfer your existing setup completely, without need to reinstall everything, or when you want to make major hardware changes like change the motherboard or GPU, which would usually cause Windows to stop booting normally.

On: [Toshiba Laptop]

Repartition and Create space alongside [Win 8.1 Preinstalled] for [Win7 SP1 Ultimate][Minus OLD Drivers] partiation

Enable Dual Boot

PATH B. Disk2VHD P2V (Physical to Virtual) VHD Conversion

Disk2VHD > create a VHDX (check all partitions)
Copy VHDX over to your new laptop, double click the file > CMD as Admin > bcdboot D:\Windows (where as D:\ is the path of the new mounted VHD)
Native Boot VHD

Enable Dual Boot

Comments & Questions encountered.
- This VHD when it boots will boot on NATIVE hardware or as a VM under Hyper-V ?
- Is a VHD a driver sanitized, driver agnostic generic Drive Image?
- How do DRIVERS from OLD Laptop (to remove) and NEW Laptop come into play (when executing) (if at all?)

- Windows should "reconfigure" it self when you first boot it up on a different hardware, normally at least, ofc you may need to apply new drivers if some things don't work.
- There is nothing easier/safer than VHD booting, it doesn't screw around with your native Installation on the HDD  :P I used VHD booting a lot and honestly it's one of the best features Microsoft ever added into Windows, just keep in mind this only works with W7 Professional/Enterprise and W8 Pro/Enterprise

If VHDs are so good & portable, why would we want to use PARTITIONS at all? (Assuming we had enough drive space).

I will have to add drivers for sure as its a new laptop.

My question is does the VHD get CLEANED of the PREVIOUS DRIVER/ HARDWARE PROFILE on the HDD? And when it re configures with NEW HARDWARE does it clean the previous out and or has both included on it.

Please let me know on the above 2 pathways given the outline:

- Preparation on Source Machine (OLD):
- Use on Destination Machine (NEW):
- Restore on Source Machine (OLD):

Specific VHD creation and mounting problems.

Hi,
can anyone tell me how to create and or mount a VHD that can be detected properly by Rufus and the Disk Management Snap-in running on an XP system as shown in this tutorial guide for Win 7 please?

In essence, I am looking to replicate the vhd support features of Windows 7 on Windows XP.

I normally use the wonderful ImDisk for all tasks such as this but in this instance I cannot get it to produce a VHD file that can be detected by Rufus (List USB Hard Drives enabled). I've tried other tools such as VirtualBox and Virtual Server among others without success.

I noticed that ImDisk mounts a NTFS VHD file created in Win 7 as RAW in Win XP.

Is there anyway to resolve these issues at all?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

VHD BCD Store Challenge: Chainload Bootmgr

$

Booting OS from a single VHD file offers plenty of advantages in many usage scenarios. Win7 Bootldr supports native OS boot from VHD via a native VHD driver, whether the VHD is fixed, dynamic or differencing, whether contiguous or not. Its a tremendous advantage over current Grub4DOS state, supporting only boot from fixed contiguous VHDs. However, the disclosed so far by MS way to boot OS from VHD requires a supported OS version (Win7 Ultimate / Enterprise & Server 2008R2), while Grub4DOS can boot just about any OS from VHD, when a mapped by Grub4DOS VHD can be hot-swapped by a pre-installed to the OS on VHD 3rd party VHD driver. The boot process follows conditions stored in BCD Store Registry hive.

The challenge is: how to change parameters of Win7 BCD Store installed on a host drive to make Bootmgr on the host chainload Bootmgr on a VHD saved on that host? Or chainload any other bootloader inside that VHD?

That way one would be able to use native Bootmgr support for all VHD types, while also overcoming OS version restrictions, since when OS is booted by a boot device located inside the VHD, it considers that drive to be a Hard Drive, and not a VHD, hence boot restrictions are lifted. :secret:

Of course, a separate challenge would be to teach a 3rd party VHD driver installed to the OS on VHD to hot-swap the virtual drive, mapped by Bootmgr, or to port native VHD drivers to Legacy OSs, but at least all Win7 versions will get supported for native boot that way without any restrictions. Keep in mind so, this is a learning challenge, not intended to bypass any OS licensing terms, but to improve your knowledge and skills in the OS Boot subject. Don't use any such method for daily computing tasks! :)

To help, there are several tools available to manipulate BCD Store content, some more convenient are EasyBCD and Visual BCD Editor. Of course, Virtual Hard Disk Format Specification and BCDEdit Commands for Boot Environment can help, also BCD WMI Provider Reference. Don't forget to also look through Diddy's BCDEdit Notes as well, and use Boot Configuration Data Tutorial if not satisfied. Some extra info is also found in How to edit BCD with Editor forum thread, and plentiful other sources on the web. :pizza:

When playing with VHDs, one can accidentally mount 2 of them with the same OS cloned, thus prompting the system to change Disk Signature on one of the VHDs. EasyBCD can fix that with BCD Deployment feature, once you open a suitable BCD Store in it from any running OS. Another way of Fixing Disk Signature Collisions outcome, blocking OS boot from VHD, would be manually reverting back its original Sig. Keep in mind however, Disk Signature seems to be only verified when chainloading control to a bootloader inside the VHD, i.e. when treating it as a Hard disk rather than Filedisk.

Good luck with your efforts, and keep members posted on your success. :)

How to transfer control from bootmgr (host-store) to 'grldr/grldr.mbr' and/or bootmgr (vhd-store) inside VHD ?

Hello Everyone......

Suppose I have a single partition on the host with a bcd store and bootmgr (host-store), and a VHD file also has 'grldr/grldr.mbr' and/or

{bcdstore and bootmgr (vhd-store)}, and I want to boot my system as follows:

1. PC boot from host-store
2. Transfer control from bootmgr (host-store) to 'grldr/grldr.mgr' and/or bootmgr (vhd-store) inside VHD

3. 'grldr/grldr.mbr' and/or 'vhd-store' will take control over and execute 'Easy2Boot' files within from VHD

Is it possible to implement any one of following boot sequence ?

1-  C:\bootmgr -> C:\boot\bcd -> C:\Easy2Boot.vhdx -> \grldr -> \menu.lst -> Easy2Boot
2-  C:\bootmgr -> C:\boot\bcd -> C:\Easy2Boot.vhdx -> \bootmgr -> \boot\bcd -> \grldr -> \menu.lst -> Easy2Boot

Please suggest any other possible alternative if above boot sequence will not be possible to implement.............

Thanks & Regards.......

Migrate Win 7 or 8 Install from BIOS machine to Native Boot VHD on UEFI machine

$

Based on all of these threads of research:

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/172462-migrating-windows-7-or-8-install-from-bios-machine-to-native-boot-vhd/?p=1084252

So, I consolidated a lot of info from earlier threads from Here and MDL and MSFN and posted it on the above link.

What I have realized with the following post below (in relation to the MSFN link posted above) is that I am doing something wrong with the VHDs - As a lot of steps that I have taken are from various articles, blogs and forums.

I've assembled and outlined the steps BELOW. I need to figure out where and what is wrong and how I can do this CLEANER and better from SCRATCH to avoid errors.

Update:

Ok, I am kind of giving up on Windows 7.

So, just to test the ability and issues around this new Toshiba Laptop and Native booting,
I ImageX 2 VHDs with fresh install from Win 8 and Win 8.1 each.
Did a simple bcdboot ?:\Windows to added them to Boot Menu.
They are running fine.
W8.VHD GPT [Simple Volume]
W81.VHD GPT [Simple Volume]

They have a simple single volume structure and no System, EFI or MSR Partitions within

For some reason the VHDs I have created from my Source Machine are working with Hyper-V & VMWare.
But not working Native Boot.

So, I am wondering if it has something due to the Primary OS Parition and Pre OS partition (Reserved, EFI, System, MSR) structures?

Please don't ignore the following Paragraph: I think this is a key issue where I am making some mistake with the VHDs or its Structure and Inter Partition mapping

I need to figure out the following:

X) - STRUCTURES of VHDs that work fine for Native Booting

e.g. Should they have Simple Volume Primary partitions ONLY?

AND/ OR they will be fine with/without Virtual EFI, System, MSR, Reserved etc. Internal to VHD i.e. Virtual Partitions that will work without issues.

Y) - Right WAY to IMAGE Existing machine: (Full DIsk w PreOS Partitions or Only OS Partition) and MAP the IMAGE to the correct part of the STRUCTURE of VHDs (as outlined above)

Now, the VHD I have from my source system has gone through following changes:

Original & Current Source System
- MBR [1/200 MB Reserved/SystemPartition][Primary Partition Win7x64 SP1]

>> Disk2VHD

W7-MBR.VHD
- MBR [1/200 MB Reserved/SystemPartition][Primary Partition Win7x64 SP1]

(Works in Hyper-V + VMWare, NOT Native Boot)

>> Converted to GPT VHD with using gptgen and added System + MSR Partition as outlined here - http://www.dertechblog.de/en/2014/01/howto-hyper-v-gen1-vm-convert-gen2-vm/
W7-GPT.VHD
- GPT [EFI:100,FAT32, "System",S:][MSR:128][][Primary Partition Win7x64 SP1]

>> EFI boot files copied to “System” Partition i.e. Virtual EFI partition

The important UEFI boot files will then use the tool bcdboot copied to the system partition. Where h corresponds: the drive letter of the virtual Windows partition and s: the drive letter of the virtual EFI partition:
bcdboot h:\windows /s s: /f UEFI

(Works in VMWare with EFI, NOT Native Boot .. Windows 7 issues as pointed out in first post)

(So, I figured lets take this VHD to Windows 8)
>> Upgraded to Win8 inside VMWare >> SYSPREP
W7to8-GPT.VHD
- GPT [EFI:100,FAT32, "System",S:][MSR:128][][Primary Partition Win8x64 Pro]

( Native boot still does not work | VMWare booting works)

Error on screen for this Most current error for this Win 7 upgraded to Win 8 VHD

RECOVERY
Your PC needs to be repaired
The operating system couldn't be located because the system registry file is missing or contains errors
File: \Windows\System32\config\system
Error Code: 0xc0000000d

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you dont have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer

I guess the typical reply would be to try and REPAIR this OS.

But, I think OS is working (in VMWre), but some part of the FLOW of  BOOTING to Native VHD has some issue. i.e from

Firmware > HDD Host EFI > [VHD > Virtual EFI Partition > VIrtual OS Partition]

On the other VHDs the flow is probably this:

Firmware > HDD Host EFI > [VHD > VIrtual OS Partition]
Do you get what I am saying here?

So I am wondering of the following.. where is the error coming into the picture:
- While CREATING/ IMAGING the VHD?
- While converting from MBR to VHD?
- While/ DUE to INSERTING the Virtual EFI & MSR partitions? - Would it be better not to have these in the VHD? Or something was done wrong with them?
- Would it be better to only IMAGE the OS Partition, and image it to a blank Partition on the GPT VHD? (Avoid conversion)

I don't mind doing a FRESH IMAGING of the OLD MACHINE. I will have to do it anyways as the OLD MACHINE has changed in last few weeks of this experiment.

But, I'd like to do it RIGHT this time and Create the Correct VHD structure to support it.
Use ImageX or DISM instead of Disk2VHD if you guys think thats better.

PS: The last time I ran a recovery disc to try and fix the Win7to8.VHD, it ended up messing up my Host HDD Win8 booting. How can I avoid that if at all you are suggesting some STEPS to REPAIR the Win7to8.VHD

virtual storage driver

This is an example of a VSS hardware provider. Vsssampleprovider along with the virtual storage driver (virtualstorage.sys) and virtual storage controller (vstorcontrol.exe) located in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\VSSSDK72\TestApps\hwprovst\bin" directory can be used to emulate the functionality of a hardware provider.

You will first need to download the VSS SDK.

Install it and play with it.

I hope The Finder will love it.
if this post is placed in the wrong subforum, Jaclaz  will move it where it's more appropriate.

Does UEFI booting read the MBR or PBR?

Is there a way with USB Flash drives to automatically use BOOTMGR.EFI if UEFI-booting, otherwise use say grub4dos? I'm trying to make an absurdly compatible Easy2Boot setup where it boots into BOOTMGR by default only if UEFI-booting. Would I need to hack grldr to rename it to "bootmgr" for MBR loading, or can I just leave the Easy2Boot MBR & PBR records and place the necessary EFI files on the root? Not sure if EFI/UEFI even generally looks at the MBR or PBR.

I also want to do this for bootable DVDs too, but I suspect it's some fancy oscdimg command.

Hello Every one;

I am stuck and need your help. I searched through the forum to find the solution to my problem, but failed.

I am using ( Win7PE_SE ) project, it works great but one problem.

I want to run portable apps from ( B=Ramdisk). The project created B: drive as ramdisk.

But when I run application, the application runs from (X: windows- Temp directory ).

I have ziped the each portable app with 7zip and created .bat file corresponding to each app.

I want to run apps from B:Temp drive like Hiren boot cd,

Note: When I boot the created iso, it creates X: drive where the Wim loads, then It creates B: Temp.

so far all good, but When I run .bat file from Pstart launcher, the application is extracted to.

X: windows-> Temp folder it runs from there.

I want to run portable apps from B: Temp, like hiren boot cd. but the apps gets extracted to X: windows-> Temp folder.

Please help.

Thank you for you help.

Syslinux and 4096 bytes sector size

Hi,

I'm trying to install syslinux on the first partition of a 3 TB hard disk:

$ /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Note: sector size is 4096 (not 512)

Disk /dev/sdb: 3000.6 GB, 3000592977920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 45600 cylinders, total 732566645 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x5119005c

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1   *         256     8388863    33554432    b  W95 FAT32
/dev/sdb2         8388864   732566644  2896711124    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

As you can see this hard disk has 4096 bytes sector size, and this is what happens when I try to install syslinux on the first partition:

# syslinux -i /dev/sdb1
syslinux: unsupported sectors size

This is the version of my syslinux (on Debian Wheezy):

$ syslinux -v
syslinux 4.05  Copyright 1994-2011 H. Peter Anvin et al

Is there any way to install syslinux on my device or do I have to switch to another boot loader (which one)?

Many thanks in advance for your help.
