Hello!

By popular request was created a section specifically for WinPE projects based on Windows 10.

http://reboot.pro/forum/146-win10pe/

This section should have been added earlier, sorry for the inconvenience. Moderators for this section are everyone inside the .script developer group. If something else is needed to fix/add, please post here.

Thanks!

Script for Winbuilder 8.2 to add Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15 Professional. Requires files from Paragon HDM 15 Recovery Media. Create the Paragon Recovery Boot Media first, using their Boot Media Builder. Then copy the files from the Paragon Software folder in the resulting ISO image to a folder.

Please note that there is a bug in the full scale launcher where it loads the boot configuration data hive into the registry and then complains that the boot disk (usually C) is locked. I provided a batch file to unload the boot configuration data registry hive. The batch file must be used AFTER starting the full scale launcher for the partition manager. The batch file may be used without harm any time that the program complains about not having exclusive access to a disk drive. If I find a batter work around I will update the project script.

The hotcore driver is included, although that driver should not be required in most cases. Your Windows PE should include the Volume Shadow Service, and you will probably not back up the ram drive running the PE OS. Also, you must still have exclusive access to restore a partition. VSS and hotcore are only useful to back up in-use partitions.

The Universal Image Mounter that mounts a virtual disk as a drive letter is not supported in the Windows PE environment. It is possible to mount virtual disk images within the program but not as a normal Windows disk drive letter. Use the file transfer wizard rather than Windows Explorer to transfer files out of a virtual disk image.

Finaly, I want to express my thanks to Arvy who created the script for Hard Disk Manager 12, that I used as a basis for creating this script.

WINPE boot iso's and customize PC name

Hi,

I have created a thin client image USB using the HP software ThinUpdate.

This starts up in a WinPE 10 environment.

the only downside is that the computer name that is given to the thin client is the name that WinPE uses.

I want the name that WinPE starts up with is different.

What would be great that it chooses the name by type.

For example a mobile thin client uses MTC-%serialnumber% and a thin client uses TC-%serialnumber%

is this possible?

This needs to be added to an existing WINPE usb stick.

I have no experience in editing an existing winpe stick.

so i need a little tutorial for that to.

Also it would be nice to boot to another ISO from the commandline in winpe for example hironsboot.

this is not a must but would be nice  :) .

MistyPE Name Change?

So, is it time for a name change for the project.

I've never been overly keen on the name MistyPE - it was used out of laziness and a lack of any other suggestions (see here for the background).

I was thinking of perhaps Mini-WinPE - tying my two (very closely linked) projects together.

The next full release would be a good time to do this.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Misty

P.s. It's such a bloody shame that erwan.l beat me to the name QuickPE!

Chainload KNOPPIX isolinux.cfg from Grub4dos menu.lst

Dear All,

I created a multiboot USB as following;

  • First partition contains Gandalf's Win PE
  • Second partition contains Win7 Pro SP1 installer
  • Third partition contains syslinux bootloader, where I installed multiple linux distros using YUMI. One of the distro is KNOPPIX.

Things work fine. I am able to chainload 3rd partition, which will load YUMI menu from which I can navigate to all linux distros.

I'm doing some r&d to load everything through Grub4dos menu itself instead of going through YUMI menu. KNOPPIX got installed in (hd0,3)/multiboot/ KNOPPIX_V7.6.1DVD-2016-01-16-EN /. My every attempt to translate  (hd0,3)/multiboot/ KNOPPIX_V7.6.1DVD-2016-01-16-EN /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg failed so far. Below menu.lst entry will give you a fair idea what all I tried so far.

title 3.1 Boot Knoppix v7.6 - TEST\n Run KNOPPIX, a Live Linux system for System Administrators
#map (hd0,2)/multiboot/KNOPPIX_V7.6.1DVD-2016-01-16-EN/boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin (hd32)
#map (hd0,2)/multiboot/KNOPPIX_V7.6.1DVD-2016-01-16-EN/boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg (hd32)
#map --hook
root (hd0,2)/multiboot/KNOPPIX_V7.6.1DVD-2016-01-16-EN
kernel /boot/isolinux/linux64 knoppix_dir=/KNOPPIX lang=en apm=power-off nomce libata.force=noncq hpsa.hpsa_allow_any=1 loglevel=1
initrd /boot/isolinux/minirt.gz
#chainloader (hd32)
boot

I will see if I can upload isolinux.cfg of KNOPPIX, which YUMI menu system is calling to launch KNOPPIX and works well. I would like to load it through Grub4dos itself, if possible.

Thanks.

Bind error 10013

I have just downloaded the 64bit version of tftpd32 to my Windows 7 64 bit OS.

When I open it gives the error:  Bind error 10013.  An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions.

The software will open once I click OK.  After a few moments the tftpd server tab disappears.  If I look in Services.msc the service is still running.

I don't have any firewalls installed and the Windows Firewall is disabled.  The only AV I am running is Security Essentials.  I have added an exception for the tftpd executable and the installation directory.  No luck - still get error.

Any ideas out there?  I Googled and this error turns up a lot of stuff but nothing I saw was related to tftpd32

Thanks.

What is a good SATA-to-USB adapter that is capable of reading 4TB+ drives?

Hello,

I would like to buy a 4tb+ capable sata-to-usb adapter and would need your help in picking one.

The following questions come to mind:

  • what to look for in buying such an adapter? what specs, details etc.
  • how can I tell the drive capacity limit of the adapter? most manufacturers don't give out this information
  • do you have any recommandations? tell your experience, what you bought? what you regret buying?

Thank you!

Windows UEFI Boot Questions?

$

I still don't have any hardware with UEFI firmware and my test environment is still VMWare Player (with firmware="efi" added to the config file)

I've been playing around with several virtual machines for some tests I'm doing - 64-bit versions of Windows Vista (SP1), Windows 7 (SP1) and Windows 8.1 installed in native UEFI mode. So what do the following files (on the EFI System Partition) actually do?
  • \EFI\Microsoft\boot\bootmgfw.efi
  • \EFI\Microsoft\boot\bootmgr.efi
On the Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems I was able to delete them without any obvious consequences - both operating systems booted fine.

On the Windows Vista system I was able to boot without bootmgr.efi - it wouldn't boot without bootmgfw.efi though. Interestingly the Vista install did not actually appear to have a firmware boot loader at all - there was no \EFI\boot\bootx64.efi file. VMWare Player appears to boot the Vista installation via the Windows Boot Manager option in the UEFI Boot Manager menu (accessible by pressing the Esc key during power up - I added bios.bootDelay="5000" to the config file so that I actually had enough time to press it!!!)

I don't really get many aspects of this UEFI!

A simplified explanation of the Windows UEFI boot process would be really helpful. There are various discussions out there that imply that bootmgfw.efi is part of the process - didn't seem to be on two out of my three test systems! Or is it perhaps somehow required for hibernate to work properly?

Regards,

Misty

Logical Paritition and Drive - Serial number

$

Well, been trying few days now to find a function from Windows that would allow me to change FAT16 partition serial number. Any partition tools yes are capable of doing it, but I am after Windows Native way of writing  the bit.

Native:

- Diskpart -> can set Drive UniqueID (but couldn't find a way to set VOLUME serial number).

3rd Party:

- DD for Windows (might be capable of it) -> but 3rd party solution.

- Most partition tools are capable of it -> but 3rd party solution.

So, does anyone here know a way to set the 0x012345678 (FAT16), VolumeSerialNumber?

Usable tools I am looking at are:

- WMI

- PowerShell

- CMD

- .NET languages

- Any tool coming with Windows Vista->10 or it's support language redistributables (C++, .NET 'up-to 4.5.1').

How to use Fbinst tool GUI

I spent some time digging trying to find a Tutorial on how to use FBisnt tool GUI. After a few days I found a chinese site that had one but was in chinese. This tool create what I assume is a primary and extended Master Boot Record that can complete hide your boot files and Grub4dos menu. I though this was really cool. Anyway I am going to try and show everyone what I know about this and I may learn a few things as well. First we need to change the language of the program to english.
Posted Image
Now I found it best to start from a previous built fba file archive. Open the file as shown here ( I tried to upload a starter file but I have to slow of a connection) You will need to right click and import image and gfxmenu into the ud area.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Now from the ud window by right clicking in the window you can delete, import and export files.
Posted Image
You will need to import your iso image here import to primary area.
Next you will need to modify the menu.lst. to do this select the Grldr menu button
you then can edit as you see fit. To save changes highlight entire text and right click and select save as ansi
as show here
Posted Image
You can also have a fb menu as well and edit and change it the same way but i simple dont need it and have it disabled with a timeout of 0. Anyway, you should now have your ISO image showing up in the ud primary area and have the Grldr menu as you need it to be next we will format the drive you are going to put this on. This may destroy all the data on the drive if the MBR area is being increased larger than it once was. KEEP YOUR DATA IN SAFE PLACE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
Before we go any farther lets save everthing select data management then select backup all files to archive
So now with your drive plugged in under boot config select format options. Select your fba archive file. Now here is somewhat trial and error until find the correct size of the primary and extended areas. but your setup should look something like this
Posted Image
For the most part if something is not setup correctly it will fault and tell you what needs changed. once your format operation is complete you will need to select Boot Config then select BPB Management then select copy BPB to MBR
as shown
Posted Image
but when your done your entire build, menu etc.... everything will be in a hidden partition. You will now need to format your disk. from my computer right click and select format. once you have formated your drive you are finished the build has be placed in a hidden partition that only you know is there. As reported by disk management

DiskMgr

I am very excited to announce the release of DiskMgr - a new program for managing disk attributes in WinFE (and WinPE/Windows) developed by our very own erwan.l :worship:

Erwan has very generously developed native 32 and 64-bit versions of DiskMgr. This program has a very simple UI - for more information please check out my brief guide - here.

At the time of writing Erwan has not added the program to his own site, however he has kindly given consent for it to be distributed with MistyPE/Mini-WinFE. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Erwan for spending his valuable time developing this program - thank you my friend.

Misty

P.s. The hard work is all Erwan's - my input was limited to testing and requesting. We discovered some issues with Microsoft API calls along the way - I will post more on this later.

Install any version of 7 with default ei.cfg?

Hello,

I have an original Windows 7 Ultimate disk which has the ei.cfg and can only install the Ultimate edition.

Is there someway I can force the installer to allow the installation of all the other editions? Keep in mind that we are talking about an already burned disk, so no ei.cfg modifications can be done.

Thank you.
