Mounting VDI in Windows 8.1

$

Hi All

I have read many of the threads (great info from Olof and was_jacalz) that relate to my needs and also tried multiple tools and so far have come up short with my objective:

- Mounting (and reading) a .vdi virtual hard disk from an Oracle Virtual Box VM in the host Windows 8.1 PC

I feel like I am very close and stuck on the offset value but of course there may be some other basic flaw in my interpretation of the steps to follow so I will try and detail everything I have done for verification.

First of all the .vdi file is about 25GB and has a windows 7 image installed with just one partition from the Disk management tool inside the VM.

I want to be able to access the contents of the image sometimes on my host OS without actually booting the VM.

I have installed imdisk and have got it to mount the disk from the right click shell integration. From the GUI pop out I then mount the disk. Windows sees the disk and allocates the drive letter but it tells me that the disk needs to be formatted.

I have tried many offsets none of which seem to work ... first I tried 63 blocks ... then I discovered the need to find the actual start of the RAW HDD? I now have v.exe installed as a hex file reader. From here I have searched for the MBR and found 3 possible MBRs which confused me ... I then found the following "end points" with the 55AA signature ...

I think my basic familiarity with the bytes/blocks hex/dec numbering may be a big part of my issue so I have a few key questions.

1) which MBR should I consider on this .vdi?

2) once identified what value should I set as the offset? v.exe shows me the 55AA block and when I highlight those blocks it shows

"Offset: 300080h->300081h (3145856d->3145857d)

I can't seem to enter Hex in the imdisk GUI so I presume it should be decimal, therefore I entered 3145858? should this be bytes or blocks?

Or should I be using some other of the values?

Thanks in advance for any support ... if I can get this working it will really help me address a pretty crappy workflow I have and hopefully up my productivity! (once I stop sinking hours in trying to do the basics ;)

Multi-Wim

I have ported my MultiWim-script from VistaPE to Win7PE
What it does?

You can use multiple wimfiles in one ISO selected over Microsoft-Boot-Menu in addition to grub4dos startmenu.

An example:
1. WIM - Standard for machines with more then 1gb RAM (Explorer, IE, MMC and more Addons)
2. WIM - Minimal for Machines with lower then 1gb RAM (BSExplorer, no IE, no MMC and more)

How does it work?

At first compilation deselect MultiWim and deselect 'Create ISO' and enabled only addons for minimal version. If is finished copy the wim-file fom target\source\boot.wim to another dir (for example %BaseDir%\multi-wim) rename the file to boot2.wim.
At second compilation select MultiWim and ISO and all Addons and shell for standard-version. In MultiWim select the copied boot2.wim and set the caption for the Boot-Entry.
Thats all
At runtime you can select the two versions for WIN7PE.

Here you can download it:

Attached File  MultiWim.7z   8.13KB   209 downloads

Place it in Folder OtherOS.

Multiboot USB and Windows 8.1 Update

Hi

With the latest version of the Sardu software, it is possible to create a USB stick that allows the UEFI/BIOS multiboot of the customized editions of the Windows 8.1 Update 32/64 bit? If yes, there is a guide to do this?

Thanks

Boot from 4K sectors (and, in particular, USB)

For accessing USB mass storage devices, does Grub4DOS have
its own USB software "stack", or does it rely on BIOS support (if any) ?

I guess it uses own stack entirely - and I hope it's the case.

If so, I would suggest a much needed IMO fix/enhancement :
at the moment, Grub4DOS appears not to be able to deal with USB disks that
present 4 K-byte sectors to the host. Could such support be programmed in,
up to and including "BIOS int 13" extension to allow bootstrapping from such
disks' MBR and their legacy OS PBRs ?

[Added:] If OTOH G4D does not include an USB stack at all /yet/, please consider
doing it, including large sectors from the inception !

Are there any alternatives ? (don't say "plop", that does NOT have 4k sector support, but non-working 'experimental')

Multiboot Legancy and UEFI

Hi there!

I hope I find help here. I would like to create a multiboot that will work in two modes. After loading the bios boot manager will have to choose Legancy and UEFI. After selecting Legancy reads a menu with a choice such as: Avira / Hirren boot / Memtest etc. After selecting the UEFI mode reads the same way but with a choice of menu installers Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 x64. Best to read directly ISO. What I've tried?

- UEFI_MULTI
- Yumi
- Multisystem (Linux)
- Clover
- refind
- Easy2boot
- Similar to the above.

All of the above do not work to a certain extent as if I wanted to. I am currently using Syslinux 6.03. Unfortunately, after all of the files (both files .efi) flash drive is visible only for Legancy mode.
Maybe some of you have any ideas?

help.. how not to grubinst

$

Hi guys ....Aaaaagh... I've managed to navigate down sh*te street without a paddle somehow!

Experimented (fool) with 500GB NTFS USB seagate drive hooked-up with "grubinst_gui.exe"
thought I'd install grub4dos to secure FAT32 10GB partition (was secured by password)
now opened.... (was)

After sucessful install the virtual Z:10GB FAT32 drive disappeared and the NTFS drive
now is RAW prompting me to format it!!

It would be a shame to lose the 200GB(?) of used data from it.
It might be possible to retrieve data using salvage software.

With help (please) from your good lovely Reboot.pro members I'd rather find a shorter
solution that will stop me pulling my hair out!

... hmmm have a good laugh at the pic lol (can'nt believe I did this)

Is there a true "Windows XP SP3 LiveCD" project?

$

Dear e-readers,

Please let me ask you, is there a true "Windows XP SP3 LiveCD" project? By that I mean a project that can create a "Windows XP SP3 LiveCD". I know that an absolutely true (in the sense of a complete) "Windows XP SP3 LiveCD" is impossible to create, for all LiveCD's are strip down versions of Windows. However, an almost true "Windows XP SP3 LiveCD" for me would be one that is at least compatible with basic portable applications intended for "Window XP SP3". Unfortunately, all projects I know such as BartPE, WinBuilder, Reatogo, Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, etc., can create "Windows XP LiveCD's" up to SP2 but not SP3. I am familar with ETBoot which can create SP3-compatible discs, but the resulting discs are machine-specifc which is not the case with the other projects I mentioned.

Yes, I know. Before you ask me why I am still interested in "Windows XP" in 2015 while Microsoft already dumped it, please let me respectufully tell you that in asmuch as browsers (especially portable browsers) such as Firefox, Palemoon, Chrome, K-Meleon, etc., keep supporting "Windows XP", I will keep using "Windows XP". Of course, some of these browsers only support "Windows XP SP3"...hence more power to my search for a "Windows XP SP3 LiveCD"!

Cheers,

USB stick and iso image greater of 4096 MB

Hi

I would use the WinSetupFromUSB utility to create a USB stick to insert two customized iso of Windows 8.x.

The problem is that one of the image exceeds the size of 4096 MB.

So, how do I do to put this image in the USB stick so that, when I will have to boot from this USB stick into a BIOS or UEFI computer, its operating system starts correctly?

Thanks

Reboot pro made it to Simon King's Censorship Hall of Fame

$

In an un expected and dramatic move  :w00t: , reboot.pro was today added :1st: to the all time Simon King's Censorship Hall of Fame:

http://www.zipmagic.co/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=82

finally being awarded the same relevance as other competitors such as MSFN, Wikipedia and TabletPCReview:

http://www.zipmagic.co/forums/viewforum.php?f=4

Unfortunately the precursor of all, DonationCoder, has not been included. :(

For those that are unaware of the events in those early days, before  Simon King's Censorship Hall of Fame was founded, here are some relevant links:

http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=30851.0

http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=33215.0

http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=33638.0

To be fair, DonationCoder had the privilege of being addressed in a press release:

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/simon-kings-utilities-group-claims-donationcoder-cyber-bullies-and-censors-magicrar-the-emerging-standard-in-data-compression-and-the-only-alternative-to-winzip-and-winrar-2013-09-23

and to be mentioned in a newsletter to the Licensed users of MagicRAR:

http://www.nsaneforums.com/topic/187713-simon-kings-magicrar-vs-donationcoder-round-1-fight/

While I believe that this achievement is on par of the above, if any of the Licensed users of ZipMagic members of the board would receive a similar letter, it would be nice if they could publish it here, somehow just entering the Hall of Fame seems a tadbit less relevant than a targeted e-mail.

The expected UPROAR of indignation about censorship on TabletPcReview on Slashdot:

http://slashdot.org/submission/3864079/online-censorship-muzzling-voice-of-emerging-products

NEVER was, that could be another way to have reboot.pro distinguish itself from the other entries in the Hall of Fame.

PE 3.x Packages Installation Script

$

I occasionally have need to add WAIK packages to my WinPE7_SE build (HTA support, MDAC support, etc). I heavily modifiied a script from Mustang and Khauyeung in order to more efficently acomplish what I wanted to do.

I'm posting the code here currently rather than as a download, because the script is limited to build systems that can use DISM.exe without erroring (which can happen when an earlier version of WinPE7_SE has installed wimfltr.inf on Win 7). Note that the x86 DISM.exe can service an x64 image/packages. Hopefully some will find it useful.

Hi

I created two customized iso of Windows 8.1 Update.

With YUMI 2.0.1.6 for Windows, how do I create a bootable USB stick that allows to choose (via the initial boot menu) one of these iso so that I can install on some computers with the BIOS or UEFI?

Also, how do I change the boot menu item and change the label volume of this USB stick?

Thanks

XP x64 edition SP2 explorer copy/paste html incomplete

$

hi everyone,

I am trying to find the solution to a problem Im having when copy/paste .htm & .html (saved web pages)

Ive only seen this behavior in XPx64, in windows explorer, when I copy an .html file then paste it elsewhere it does not bring the associated folders and files with it like all other versions Ive used before so I have to copy the .html file and then also extra folder that contains data for the .html

surely there is a setting to change this behavior somewhere but I have not found it and I cant seem to think of a search phrase that gets any results related to this issue.

anyone have an answer or suggestions? thanks
