Win7 and mui files

I just did some tests on a english Win7PE.
I deleted mui files for different programs, expecting to lose the gui or at least the writing on the buttons and menus.

So far, i have not been able to see any difference.

Are the mui files only for non english versions required? :confused1:

USB 2.0 from USB 1.1

Hi.
I have a Gigabyte GA-M52L-S3P mainboard (latest nonBeta Bios) with USB 2.0.
I use Grub4Dos on a 20 GB Fat32 partition from a 500 GB Western Digital USB 2.0 HDD.
On some mainboards (including mine) USB speed drops to 1.1. From what I read here it's Bios's fault. Ok. But is there a way to make it 2.0 on those mainboards too? Or at least on my mainboard...
Oh, and Plop it's not a good solution for me (I have my reasons).
Thank you for any help.

Best regards, CC3

Question: Mount a folder as a drive (in ram)

Hi.

Is there a way to mount a folder (say, on CDRom) as a drive, in ram.
And for example have this folder appear, from a Dos image, as a drive.

:)

The goal, being to have easy access to the files of the folder while in windows,
not stored in an Iso.

In Grub4dos, btw.

Please ignore - false alarm - Grub4dos latest issues with MS-DOS in Qemu

I am having some issues with latest (2012) versions of grub4dos, including latest 0.4.5c-2012-12-05 (but also earlier versions).

Simple Qemu machine.

Just one hard disk with MS-DOS 7.1, booting from the floppy with grub4dos.

Trying to chainload /io.sys and boot results in rebooting.

Same happens with just the floppy (and the io.sys, msdos.sys and command.com on the floppy).

An older 0.4.5b  2011-09-18 works perfectly in exactly the same VM/setup.

If I use the latter to load successfully DOS and from DOS I run the 2012 version of grub.exe I have the same results (i.e. both grldr and grub.exe are affected)

What should I do (which commands output is useful) to help troubleshooting/report the bug?

Wonko

P.S.: I take it back, it must have been a "glitch in the matrix", a reboot of the "real machine" fixed the issues in Qemu :dubbio:

Virtual port Usb (question)

Hello,

I am trying to connect an old hardware via Irda, on a windows7 machine (32).
The computer I am using has no serial ports, just Usb.
The software for the Irda communication needs to assign a port to the irda,
and usb is not seen as a port.
The idea is to create a virtual port, than pipe /reassign / pseudo-ize the usb to a port number.

Has anyone ever done something similar with usb /non-existant serial?

ImDisk and large amounts of RAM

Has ImDisk been tested on servers with large amounts of RAM?  For example, Windows Server 2012 Standard supports up to 4TB of memory so I'm curious how much of 4TB of RAM has been proven to be stable when brought into the RAM Drive.  Specifically, any testing done on RAM drive configurations over 200GB?  Thanks!

live repair disk for blind people

Hello! I'm new here and am an absolute beginner. Being myself blind I try to help people like me to easily fix their own computers when Windows can not start. What I try to achieve is live windows disk with good sound support. The sound is very important. Blind people use software application called "screen reader" to have access to their computers. It gives them an audio feedback. More on this here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenreader
There is a very good and open source screen reader called NVDA (none visual desktop access)
http://www.nvda-project.org
It has a portable version. I want to make a disk with built in and automatically starting NVDA screen reader, a sound support for most familiar soundcards (including USB cards), some software for diagnostic, repair, backup and restoration and at least one portable media player as winamp. I understand if all sound drivers are build in, it will become too big and heavy project, so if there is such a thing as universal audio or usb sound card drivers I think they are enough.
I need your advice whitch project is best for this and (if possible) step by step instructions to build accessible live Windows CD. I was able to create some disks with the default settings from win7PE-SE, naughty PE and live XP, but when it comes to personalization than either sound doesn't work, or there is another problem. So after a around 2 weeks of reading and experimenting I decided to ask for help. Please be as less technical as you can. I need an easy way to do the things. Oh, and English is not my first language.

And please, no pictures, I can't see them. Just describe with words when possible.
Thank you!

Issue Creating Bootable USB - ISO works fine

$

Hello.

I'm trying to test out this product, but am having the following problem.

- I have a 4GB USB drive, freshly formatted with FAT32.

- I open up XBoot and add my ISOs (I even downloaded one of the recommended (Knoppix) ISOs to try) and click "Create USB" and it does - but QEMU won't show the sample and it will not boot.

- I did hit the "Create ISO" button and it created an ISO.  The ISO runs fine in QEMU, and once burned works fine in a PC when booted.

- I have tried another USB drive, with the same result.

Is there anything I'm possibly missing? Or could anyone point me in the right direction?

Any help would be much appreciated!

~Eric.

Rufus (introduction topic)

Hello all,

If you look in the Boot Tools section, you will see a new entry called Rufus. I am the author of this program.

Rufus, is a Windows utility that helps format and create bootable USB drives. It can do so using either DOS (embedded) or an user provided bootable ISO, such as Windows or Linux installation media.

Why would you want to use Rufus?

Rufus takes the approach compensating for a feature that should be enabled in every OS by default, which is the ability to quickly and easily create a bootable USB, either for DOS or from a bootable ISO.
With USB now being ubiquitous, we see little reason why, in 2012, the default Windows formatting dialog offers the option to create an obsolete bootable floppy, but not a more useful bootable USB.

As such we believe that, any Windows user, be them sysadmins or occasional users, should have the ability to quickly and painlessly create a bootable USB, and this is exactly what Rufus aims at providing.
- Need a DOS bootable USB to flash a BIOS or some other firmware? Launch Rufus, click the Start button, copy the ROM and flasher files and you're done.
- Have a bootable ISO that you'd like to convert to USB? Launch Rufus, select the ISO, click the Start button and that's it.
A bootable USB tool really shouldn't be more complicated than that!

Rufus Features

Now, while the above can be achieved with other tools (though we believe not as easily) this is what we think makes Rufus stand above the competition:
- Rufus is fast: It is usually quite a bit faster than the competition, especially because we use an internal ISO library (libcdio) while most other tools reuse 7z, which is actually slower than libcdio on extraction. For some speed comparison results, please see here.
- Rufus is small: Why should a bootable USB creation tool be more than 1 MB? Rufus is currently around 150 KB, and still offers ISO support.
- Rufus is simple to use: Its UI is very similar to the familiar Windows formatting dialog, and it doesn't bother the user with options that are confusing or unneeded.
- Rufus doesn't require an installer: An utility that does a simple task, that most users will only perform occasionally shouldn't require an installer. Just download, run it, and get done with it.
- Rufus keeps true to the original ISO content: Unlike other tools, Rufus does not override any of the config files that were set by the original creators - instead it just reuses them.
- Rufus is generic: A bootable USB creation tool should not have to ask its users about the type of ISO provided. This also ensures that the tool will support ISOs that have yet to be created. For a non exhaustive list of bootable ISOs Rufus is known to work with, please see here.
- Rufus can check devices for bad blocks: Up to 4 passes can be selected to find out if your media is defective. We believe that a formatting utility should always come with the ability to check for defects.
- Rufus will detect and set a non US locale (DOS): If the Windows version you use is set to a specific locale, you probably want DOS to use the same. Why should you be constrained to use DOS with an US keyboard? Rufus will detect and set the locale for you (while still providing the option to fall back to US keyboard during boot, if needed).
- Rufus can set an internationalized/extended label: If you format a disk to FAT, being constrained to 11 uppercase English characters for the label is very limiting. NTFS also has its limitations. Rufus can use the autorun/autoplay feature of Windows to display a label that contains any characters you like.
- There's a version of Rufus that comes with native FreeDOS: While slightly larger than the standard version of Rufus (~410 KB) it offers a more modern and much improved version of DOS. Check it out!
- Rufus is 100% Free Source: Rufus is released under GPLv3. If you're a developer and you really would like a new feature added, you very much can!

For additional info, you are invited to have a look at its entry in the downloads section or its official homepage.

For a more technical overview of how Rufus works, please read on.

The utility originally started as a replacement for the venerable HPUSBFW tool and basically offers all the features HPUSBFW has, apart from the ability to provide external DOS files. The reason behind that is that we provide a version of Rufus with FreeDOS embedded, therefore use for external DOS files would be very limited. Thus, Rufus should detect and formats USB drives in pretty much the same fashion as HPUSBFW, except it uses ms-sys to create the DOS or FreeDOS boot sectors.

For ISO9660 and UDF support, Rufus relies on libcdio (which seems much faster than 7zip for extraction) and syslinux. The way isolinux config files are handled is by creating a /syslinux.cfg on the target (if needed) that references an already existing config file. So far, this method seems work very well, apart from a small issue with distros that use obsolete versions of vesamenu.c32. The application will also attempt to update the existing isolinux/syslinux config file, if a disk label is required by the kernel.
With this, the produced USB is as close as possible to the original ISO, while most recent isolinux based bootable ISOs should be supported in a generic fashion.

With regards to Windows support (Vista or later), we simply format the drive as NTFS (which, btw, is the only filesystem that can properly handle the > 4GB install.wim from the x64 version of the Windows 8 developer preview) and use ms-sys to add the NTFS record, along with the bootmgr we pick from the ISO.

Finally, if requested (and if none exists) Rufus can also add an autorun.inf and icon, to set a customized/internationalized label as well as a drive icon.

If you have comments or ideas for improvement, feel free to do so, knowing that:
- I am not planning to create a commandline version of the utility, since I'd rather see features added to it than have it reused in another application.
- I am not planning to look into multiboot. I think multiboot is way too user specific and I don't see a generic solution for it that I could find acceptable. Also, if people need a tool to create a multiboot USB for them, I don't think they should be using multiboot in the first place. This is even more true if a program like Rufus can manage to make it quick and easy to switch between ISOs instead of having to create a multiboot USB.

Right now, the next thing I'd like to support would be BartPE and XP, though this may be a bit of a challenge. I'm hoping that either the ISO's existing SETUPLDR.BIN can be used (even if it needs to be patched) or that ReactOS's freeldr can help. Basically, I'd like Rufus to support anything WinPE based.
I'm also aware about grub4dos and iPXE, though I'm not currently sure whether anything specific should be done there. It looks to me like simply installing a blank syslinux and letting users do the chainloading would be acceptable, especially as I'd like to keep the utility small.

Again, please don't hesitate to give Rufus a try and let me know what you think.

Something was discovered today when I was helping someone over at the driver packs forum

They had a Intel C600 contoller in RAID mode, eventually got it working. thread: http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=6403

So I just noticed that the winvblockJmicron_C600.ima.gz.gz in tutorial 30 at RMPrepUSB

The TXTSETUP.OEM file contains the hardware ID for the C600 in AHCI mode

PCIVEN_8086&DEV_1D02

but not RAID mode

PCIVEN_8086&DEV_2826

Just thought you should probably add it in.

Booting WinPE 4.0

I've been beating my head over this and still have not come up with the best solution. I'm hoping someone here can help which seems to me a noob issue.

Current setup
TFTPD32 with pxelinux
using memdisk to boot winpe 4.0 (ADK) x86 and x64 iso images
A few other misc .iso and .img images at the moment. (some 700MB)

The recent issue we had is Dell not providing enough memory for memdisk anymore. I want to be ahead of the curve so when they decide to change bios's again, we don't have this issue.

I've looked into iPXE but my WAN links and spread over the world may not work to set up many web servers to serve up the PE image. I also couldn't find a way to go from pxelinux -> ipxe ... only the other way around.

I found the recient devolment by this community to use WIMBoot from pxelinux however i still get the error Too many Huffman symbols with lengths <=1

First I'm looking to solve the WinPE 4.0 issue to not use memdisk, the setup i'm currently using is:

I’m making a USB stick with:

Server 2008 R2, Win 7 32x, Win7 64x, XP OEM 32x, XP Vol Lic 32, Server 2003 R2 Std, Server 2003 R3 Ent

I’m Using Tutorial #63 to make a USB XP/Win7 & RMPrepUSB_Full_v2.1.652Beta

The Win7/Server 2008 R2 works great.

XP OEM 32x, XP Vol Lic 32, Server 2003 R2 Std, Server 2003 R3 Ent. I have WINNT.SIF files for Unattended installs & DriverPacks.net.

When I try to install XP or Server 2003, I get the red Linux screen and the last line says to leave the USB drive connected until setup completes. That is all I see, no setup, no error.

Here is the Menu.lst: All I changed was the filenames and added a few sections for Server:

multiboot cd with xboot

I used rmprepusb to format usb drive to fat32/usb-hdd/syslinux.   I then created multiboot cd from centos and debian iso images.  I have noticed that xboot replaces the boot loader.  Also, pressing boot button from qemu tab doesn't  work.  If I drag and drop iso, it works.

Interestingly, enough... When I first installed the xboot software, I installed multiboot cd on a usb which contained hiren's cd.  That worked.  After formatting the cd using rmprepusb, it stopped working.

My os is windows 7 home premium edition.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance
