Desktop PC Hanging on every BSD(FreeBSD, OpenBSD) USB boot!

Hi everybody,

I have USB memory stick that contain BSD Images (ex. OpenBSD) and I can boot from it on my NoteBook (DELL Latitude E6410) without any issue.

BUT, When I want to boot it from my PC (Intel Core i3), It hanged on first BIOS step and even I can not enter to BIOS Setup!

BTW, I tested my PC with PLOP boot manager but also PLOP have been hanged when I insert my memstick!

How can I resolve my issue?

Possible to change BIOS settings without entering BIOS?

0
0

I'm going to guess the answer is no, I suppose the BIOS runs in a special mode, and the memory regions it is able to write to/access are protected from outside access (except maybe when flashing). But since it's possible to effectively change the BIOS when flashing, then it seems reasonable to conclude that there must be a way to manipulate BIOS settings without entering it directly, either programmatically or via a script.

No?. Yes?. (provide proof). Maybe?.

How to swap install.wim/install.esd/install.swm* during installation?

I have a handful of ISOs, containing different editions of Windows. I currently make Easy2Boot imgPTN files from each ISO. But it would be more convenient to combine them all into a single imgPTN. How can I swap out these files, depending on which edition I want to install? Can it be done with a script, so that setup installs from the correct file? Or would I better better off creating a custom mega wim/esd/swm* that contains all the editions? I could always split them into swm since the file would be huge. I would also need to be able to run the setup in either legacy or BIOS mode. I spend alot of time installing and configuring Windows for others, so this would be very convenient.

Thanks!

Prevent creation of Microsoft Reserved and Recovery partition?

0

I've noticed (quite awhile back, actually) that if you install Windows 10 (or generally any Windows since Vista) on a blank disk, it will by default create a Recovery, EFI, MSR, and C drive, in that particular order from 1 to 4. I'm not sure if it applies to all versions of Windows since Vista, some may vary slightly in terms of what is created and in what order. But at least for 10, that's what I've seen. And when I say Recovery partition, it's usually less than 500MB, I'm not referring to the other type of Recovery partition that contains an install.wim, referenced on various Microsoft websites.

I've booted Windows in UEFI mode before with nothing more than an EFI and C drive partition, no Recovery or MSR. So I know that these 2 are the only ones that are absolutely critical for booting. Or in the case of legacy booting, a System Reserved and C drive partition, *OR* just a C drive marked as active, which also contains the boot files.

I also have this notion that the EFI partition should generally be not only the only FAT32 partition on the disk (preferably), but also the 1st partition as well. I've seen examples where some utilities will assume that EFI is first, and issues ensue if it isn't. Is there some kind of general rule somewhere (that applies to multiple OSes, not just Windows) that says EFI should be the first partition?

For the Recovery partition, is this *REALLY* necessary? I ask because Windows creates a folder called C:\Recovery, whose contents appear to be similar to the contents of the Recovery partition. I also tend to use outside 3rd-party tools if I need recovery functionality. So why, or is, Recovery really necessary, if Windows can just use the files at C:\Recovery for repairs, etc? As for the MSR, from what I've read it appears to be there for the purpose of converting a basic disk to a dynamic disk. It appears as unallocated/unformatted space in GParted, but is still listed as a partition in both GParted and Diskpart. Does it serve any other purposes? In my case the size is 16MB.

Another issue I've had multiple times is that when doing an in-place upgrade/Refresh/Reset, Windows will sometimes add these partitions (to the right of the C drive if I'm not mistaken), and it will go as far as to resize other partitions. This screws with my partition layout, I pre-partition in advance and like to have everything laid out exactly as I've set it. In a case this morning, I upgraded 10 Pro to Enterprise and a 2nd Recovery partition appeared on my disk. It just fucking pisses me off when Windows goes mucking around like this without my explicit consent, as I'm the owner and everything should be done with consent. It's almost enough to make me go ballistic.

Am I better off leaving Recovery and MSR alone? Or instead just let Windows setup/upgrade/Refresh/Reset create them if it wishes? Or just continue pre-partitioning as usual with only EFI and C drive, dealing with the side effects of upgrade/Refresh/Reset after the fact? If I manually create them myself and it will make use of them (preferably in GParted)? I don't really think the exact order of these partitions is particularly important, aside that they need to be placed before the C drive. Or is there a specific reasoning behind this order?

If they are safe to leave out, is there any way I can prevent an upgrade/Refresh/Reset from creating them? Perhaps I can do these things via 3rd-party tools to accomplish what I'm after?

Thanks!

a Container-creater Portable

A very good program would be if it created encrypted containers,
this in exe, these containers then when activated as tsr then
Start and put in memory a drive and then this
Exe container then opens like a zip which then mounts in the working memory
And not even over the net is visible (to keep nosy away as far as)
And only the user then sees this container as a drive but no other one,
the User/logged in User only (also no Administrator or remoteuser) have fun to beat the nut ;) ).

why as a small as possible single and portable exe,
because then can it be distributed in different ways
and stay alive to use and take in different way's.

usb-stick, UNC-path's, directly over net from the server in the network
and so on .. an single exe and executable from anywhere ..

the head encrypted key should be kick away of should give not.

How can I (easily) connect/disconnect a LAN/Ethernet connection?

0

I have two computers - one is connected to the net using a WiFi USB adapter and the other uses a (wired) LAN/Ethernet connection.

With the computer with WiFi I can easliy connect/disconnect the internet with a single click (from the system tray icon -> Connect/Disconnect). I also uncheck "connect automatically when ...". So I have full control over when the computer can access the net. (I like to have the internet disconnected when booting windows btw).

Is there a easy one-click way to do the same with a (wired) LAN/Ethernet connection?

Use FiraDisk without injecting it to boot.wim?

Hello! I'm trying to boot a windows install image via grub4dos. The error displayed is:

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.

I understand that I must use either firadisk or winvblock to make it work but I'd like a solution that does not involve editing the images. And I'd also like to NOT use easy2boot for this.

What other options are there to solve this, using the requirements above?

The version of grub4dos I'm using is 0.4.5c-2015-05-18 but I will update if required.

Thank you!

@ Nuno and Staff

This is first a question:

Does reboot.pro has a https  address?

If yes I would like to know it.

If not, I think it should, unless this means unnecesary expenses at the moment.

I am asking this because first somebody asked me on a PM, and second AFAIK it is going to be a requirement pretty soon.

Supposedly https is safer than http.

Clover Boot Disk - Create USB install macOS Sierra on Windows

0
0

Clover Boot Disk includes tools to help you create a USB install MacOS Sierra on Windows. You can create a USB install MacOS on just a few clicks.

Clover-Boot-Disk.jpg

Download:

Clover Boot Disk includes 3 files.
  1. PartIMGMapper.exe
  2. Clover.img
This is a partition image of Clover.
  3. OSX_10.12.5_Installer.hfs
This is a partition image of MacOS Sierra installer.

Download all the files at OneDrive.

Creating a USB install MacOS

  1. Format USB to NTFS.
    1. Because the image of the install MacOS partition size larger than 4GB, you can not contain it on a FAT32 partition.
    2. If you are using NTFS partitions, skip this step.
  2. Copy the two files Clover.img and OSX_10.12.5_Installer.hfs to the NTFS partition above. You will need a USB least 8GB to store these files.
  3. Running PartIMGMapper.exe and select the following:
    tao-USB-cai-macOS-tren-Windows.jpg
    1. Select Clover.img at 1, Type is FAT32.
    2. Select OSX_10.12.5_Installer.hfs at 2, Type is HFS/HFS+.
    3. Check Clover to enable booting Clover in Legacy BIOS mode.
    4. Click the button MAP
Note: If an error occurs when selecting the file, please defrag for the file first and then try again.
  4. After clicking the MAP button, the tool will set up the new partition on the USB and create a backup file with the .MBR extension.
  5. If you want to restore USB as before, run PartIMGMapper.exe, click on UNMAP and select the previously .MBR file that was backed up.
Now you will see the Clover partition, you can copy KEXT to the /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other directory and edit the Clover configuration in /EFI/CLOVER/config.plist.

ReactOS 0.4.5 released!

Hello!

A new ReactOS release was made available this week and is looking good.

img3File.png

The easiest way of trying it out is through VirtualBox, there is an image available for download.

Steps

  1. Download http://downloads.sourceforge.net/reactos/ReactOS-0.4.5-REL-vbox.zip
  2. Unpack, create a new VM on VirtualBox
  3. Use Windows XP 32bit as configuration

What I really like on ROS is the app store for installing software. Makes it really easy to download Firefox, Java, Notepad++ and the most common apps that we'd normally install (just for Wonko, they even included Opera as a browser).

My biggest problem was getting the network share to work correctly. I was able to access files on the network but not being able to download them to disk.

Format Bitlocker HDD

Hi,

my sister encripted her hdd without knowing what was doing.

Now Windows can't start and i can't format, delete or do anything.

I start Windows 10 from USB (UEFI) but i can't remove partitions or delete partitions.

I've tried wiith Gparted and is showing me access denied.

If i try to format the disk from Windows setup i'm getting "0x80070057" error.

Using diskpart gives me can't format disk even with override option.

In the BIOS i've disabled the TPM.

Anyone know what can i do more?

Thanks

Boot Win10 VHD using Linux Grub2

Hi All

Thanks for sharing the knowledge and enthusiasm about Computers :)

I have a Linux Laptop (Arch Linux) and I use Virtualbox to run W10 for those things i cant run with Wine.

However I dont have the performance desired, and was wondering how to boot from linux to that VHD I have already there with my W10 Install, so I dont need to create a partition to have dual boot.

I know there is a tool Vboot that allows that but was wondering if there is a way of doing this without this tool since its a Grub modified to allow this.

I have been searching and only found things about doing this with Grub4dos but nothing about using Linux Grub2

Could any of you please point me in the right direction ?

Thanks a million.

Windows 10 bootmgr no longer reading boot.ini

Hello! I've been testing the new bootmgr versions from Windows 10 images, Multiple Editions and Enterprise. The bootmgr from multi editions and enterprise have different checksums, and suprisingly none of them support boot.ini. The last known working edition is from windows 8.1.

Here's my issue of which i'd appreciate your guidance:

My USB drive is setup as: BOOTMGR -> BOOT.INI -> GRUB4DOS/POP

Now, In order for my VHDs to boot, I need bootmgr from windows 10. If I have bootmgr from 10, I no longer have boot.ini, and thus loose grub4dos and plop.

What could I do to have the best compatibility with VHDs and boot.ini?

Thank you!

Support for asynchronous I/O and command queues

Hello everyone!

Does ImDisk 2.* support async I/O and/or command queues? I think that would be very good for networked backends.

If it does, what interface should I use (I'd prefer .NET, but C/C++ is fine as well).

WinBuilder Syntax / Operators / Exc.

0
0

I have looked around for a bit and cannot find any documentation about syntax and operators that would explain the following:

Let's use this line of code for example:

If,%OS%,Equal,Win7,Begin
  If,Not,%ProjectName%,Equal,Win7PESE,Begin
    ShellExecute,Open,http://spam/index.php?topic=131.0
Message,"With your Windows 7 source selected, you need to use Win7PESE Project for 'WinPESE' building.#$x#$xLook at Win7PESE home page: http://spam/index.php?topic=131.0",ERROR
Halt,"With your Windows 7 source selected, you need to use Win7PESE Project for 'WinPESE' building."
  End
End

Now I will edit this code with what I would think would work, or what I am trying to accomplish and let's see if anyone would know how to do it?

If,%OS%,Equal,Win7,Begin
  If,Not,%ProjectName%,Equal,Win7PESE or SomeOtherProject1 or SomeOtherProject2,Begin
    ShellExecute,Open,http://spam/index.php?topic=131.0
Message,"With your Windows 7 source selected, you need to use Win7PESE Project for 'WinPESE' building.#$x#$xLook at Win7PESE home page: http://spam/index.php?topic=131.0",ERROR
Halt,"With your Windows 7 source selected, you need to use Win7PESE Project for 'WinPESE' building."
  End
End

So how would you go about accomplishing what I just showed you?

Is there a switch or case for WinBuilder for example?
