Need help with recovering a seemingly dead USB flash drive

$

So, today I was trying to format my Patriot Supersonic Mega 256GB FDD, in Gparted on Linux, when Gparted suddenly reported that the drive was unavailable while formatting a partition. Unplugging/replugging did nothing, Linux couldn't see it, either in Gparted, a file manager, or terminal. In Windows 10, it does register a driver, but diskpart gives the error "Virtual disk service error: There is no media in the device" when attempting to run the 'clean' command. In Device Management it registers as "13FE USB DISK 50X USB Device". This is not the correct name, it used to be different before.

I'm not even sure what caused this. How can I determine if the firmware controller is corrupt? I don't even know where to begin looking. I've had this less than a year and it has worked fine until now. Other USB devices don't have this issue for me. But maybe my USB ports are going bad? Unlikely, I think. If it can't be recovered then I will see if Patriot will send a warranty replacement.

Thanks again!

How to run AUTOMATICALLY a DOS batch script just after boot?

$

Assume I setup WinBuilder and everything according to my needs (e.g I added some programs/scripts)

Now if I boot the generated WinBuilder ToolDVD I want to run AUTOMATICALLY (as last step of the boot process)

a DOS batch script *.bat which should execute some cmdline commands inside.

Obviously this dos batch script must be added somehow BEFORE I start the generation process of WinBuilder.

How do I do this in detail?

[HELP] Win8PE and testing CTRL-ALT-DEL

Greetings,

Thanks for reading my post, I am working with Win8PE and Win8.1PE and I need to test the CTRL-ALT-DELETE functionality of the keyboard under Win8PE, for some reason I am able to test this functionality under Win7PE without any issues but Win8PE does not allow me to access that functionality.

Is there something I need to add into the build to give me this capability? This is the last test I need to perform and really have not found any information.

Thanks in advance

Windows 7/10 install iso's on usb for TC's

Hi,

I want to make a USB that contains multiple ISO files for windows 7/10 installations for different types of thin clients.

The installation for thin clients is different than a conventional windows installation.

The ISO needs to be seen as the root device (like it is the USB itself)

Also the USB needs to be booted as a secure device with uefi, is this possible?

I'm not realy experianced with these kind of usbs.

But I have experimented with Yumi mapping with grub4dos etc.

with no luck.

can someone help me with making this?

RMPrepUSB now has an 'install grub2 to MBR' option

Most of HelenOS components have been made to order specifically for HelenOS so that its essential parts can stay free of adaptation layers, glue code, franken-components and the maintenance burden incurred by them.

Just to keep a reference for trying out later. In terms of security seems good, so exotic that nobody bothers to write a virus for them. Just missing a capable web browser and some productivity tools.

I have 32bit Ubuntu 16.04.2 installed on a USB stick (formatted ext4)

I would like to add a Grub 2 menu item to boot a Win7pe ISO file from

the Ubuntu (first) partition.

I could create another partition if require.

Is the ISOSTICK abandoned?

I haven't seen updates in years.  Is this abandoned?  Will you ever update it to support modern booting via EFI?  Are you willing to share the code so some of us, myself included, can update it to support EFI and make this work again?

please?

Mounting an ISO converted to VDI

I downloaded the latest ArchLinux ISO and converted to a VDI, with:

VBoxManage  convertfromraw .\archlinux-xxx-dual.iso archiso.vdi
I am able to boot a VM from "archiso.vdi".

Now, I would like to mount and possibly modify  "archiso.vdi":
imdisk -a -f .\archiso.vdi -m r: -b XXX
Do you know what is the proper offset?

Adding .dll file to windows/system32

I just made my first live CD with Win7PE and it is awesome! But I find myself stuck as one of the programs I added needs some .dll that are missing from the CD.

I'm looking for an answer as hard as I can but am starting to lose hope in finding a solution that I understand.

I found some that say to copy/pasta the file directly in the image, but I have yet to figure out how and where !?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently testing with the .dll file in the root of the portable program, hopefully it works out but I doubt it considering my luck...

File selector not working in bare bones PE > 14393?

I'm a bit confused right now after lots of fruitless testing, but to me it looks like a basic file selection isn't working anymore in the latest bare-bones PE's (Windows 10 > 14393). I'm not sure anyone of you has even bothered testing the latest PE's (I'm taking them from the preview ESDs, exporting index 2 or 3 with Wimlib, or using winre.wim).

When using any file selector (for example in a portable text editor), after selecting the file (clicking it or selecting with "Enter") I get "not implemented", which is very weird, I don't recall ever having problems with such a basic task (I've tested all PE version imaginable over the years).

The PE is working fine overall, files load perfectly fine if you select them directly from the command line, it's just the GUI selector that's failing. Of course I've checked with Procmon, but there's no obvious missing file or anything (as far as I can see, not an expert on Procmon).

Like I said, nobody probably tried the PEs from the previews, but if anyone can point me to something I should be checking....?

(If you want to give it a try, I'll share with you in more detail how I extract the pe from the preview, I'm just extracting index 2 or 3, or take winre from \recovery, mount, set-targetpath, remove unneeded packages [but the error also occurs on a full winre], unmount, put on usb with needed boot files)

(Almost) Baremetal Hypervisor ISO (qemu-kvm) alternative to boot from VHD. Any idea on this one?

$

There are benefits of booting ISO which only consist of qemu-kvm and other small utility tools compared to directly boot into disk image file, including:

1. Pause VM execution at runtime (Linux often has trouble in hibernating)

2. Minimal overhead on booting OS which lacks driver support (i.e, Minix, Windows XP on UEFI, Windows 2000)

3. Easy troubleshooting, you can still boot on the hypervisor ISO and ask help (assuming there are working browser or IRC client in the ISO)

4. No dual boot confusion

But it's so hard to find usable & almost baremetal hypervisor ISO, Xen requires dom0 OS which adds overhead, initial devuan debootstrap image result in >200 MB image file, and I still have trouble in using qemu-kvm on Tiny Core Linux

New ADK previews - PE seriously flawed?

New ADK preview today. Direct iso link here:

https://mdl-tb.ct8.pl/getDirect.php?fileName=Windows_InsiderPreview_ADK_en-us_15042.iso

PE seems to be seriously "broken" since 14393. Will someone please tell me I'm not crazy and try installing the ADK preview (tools + PE is enough), start the ADK prompt, then make the PE folder:

copype amd64 d:\adk15042-pe-x64

then write this to usb, for example drive letter g:

makewinpemedia /ufd d:\adk15042-pe-x64 g:

Boot the usb, then type "notepad" and try to load a file. It doesn't work!!! (Error: "Not implemented").

A normal file selection dialog like this doesn't seem to work anymore. What's going on here!?
It's like this for every normal program, PE is completely unusable this way!

Problem booting PXE+TFTP+wimboot

I'm using GRUB4DOS 0.4.6a 2013-11-30

I'm trying to boot a winpe32 (win10PESE) via PXE+wimboot (no UEFI)

testing is beeing done in a Virtualbox VM

this is my grldr menu:

title BootMgr (WimBoot)
    kernel /wimboot
    initrd /{wim}/bootmgr
    initrd /{wim}/boot.sdi
    initrd /{wim}/memdisk
    initrd /{wim}/bcd
    initrd /{wim}/win10pese32.wim

* secureboot is off (no integrity checks)

everything went fine, all files load into memory

until the last file (win10pese.win) starts loading and aborts at 70%

tested with a non-touch 'boot.wim' from windows 7 and other from windows 10

and get the same result at 90%

Any ideas ?

2)    initrd -n boot.wim /{wim}/win10pese32.wim

grub4dos wimboot support

$

Not sure if this is new, but latest version supports booting from a wim file using wimboot executable and initrd.
http://grub4dos.chenall.net/categories/downloads/

This can be used to boot a variety of wim files from different folders

\wimboot

\WIN7\bootmgr
\WIN7\boot\bcd
\WIN7\boot\boot.sdi
\WIN7\sources\boot.wim

title WIMBOOT WIN7PE\nBoot WIn7PE from \WIN7 folder
kernel /wimboot
initrd @bcd=/WIN7/boot/bcd @boot.sdi=/WIN7/boot/boot.sdi @bootmgr=/WIN7/bootmgr @boot.wim=/WIN7/sources/boot.wim

You can also specify the image number, e.g.

kernel /wimboot index=2

initrd syntax is @name1=file @name2=file

also can access files inside initrd file now (maybe for patching linux?)

map /initrd.gz (rd)
ls (rd)/

grub4dos initrd

I'm trying to solve a recorrent crash booting from PXE+TFTP+wimboot

everything loads ok except when the loaded .wim file ends loading and bootmgr is about to start

I think some problem can be from initrd (memdisk)

I'm trying to put the structure in memdisk as it would be in disk

\bootmgr

\boot\boot.sdi

\boot\bcd

\x.wim

so my menu.lst contains

title BootMgr (WimBoot)
    #pxe keep
    kernel /wimboot
    initrd @bootmgr=/boot/bootmgr
    initrd /boot/boot.sdi
    initrd /boot/memdisk
    initrd /boot/bcd
    initrd @x.wim=/{wim}/win10pese32.wim

*this loads ok and then crashes the test VM/Virtualbox

tested with/without "pxe keep"

tested with strange syntax like "initrd @/boot/boot.sdi=/boot/boot.sdi" (initrd accepts this)

tested with bootfiles from Windows 7 and from Windows 10 (problem is exactly the same)

I don't know how to inspect the memdisk content (initrd container)

If someone has an idea how to do it I'll appreciate  the knowledge...

?help... please!

This is a minimalist 32 or 64-bit WinPE/WinFE with a GUI shell (BBLean - based on BlackBox for Windows) - originally created for system deployment, backup, restore and recovery.

Use this project to create WinPE (version 2.*/3.*/4.0/5.0) in a matter of minutes from Windows installation media - a DVD, local folder, network share or mounted disc image. WAIK/ADK is not required.

There is also an option to collect the necessary files from the host operating system used to run winbuilder - Windows 7/8/8.1 supported. Credit to Erwan.l whose QuickPE project pointed the way to the required commands. This option requires that WinRE be copied from the C: drive - if WinRE was not copied to the C: drive during the Windows install then it won't be possible to use this method.

Project goals -
  • A successful build every time!
  • Clean and simple user interface
  • Good quality instructions
WinBuilder version 82 is included in the download. This project has been tested on Windows Vista (SP1)/7 (SP1)/8/8.1 host Operating Systems and is also reported to be working on Windows XP (SP3).
