syslinux.efi and chainloading

 Hi all

I'm using WDS and pxelinux.efi (syslinux 6.0.3) (secure mode disabled)

I can simply rename pxelinux.efi to bootmgfw.efi, and it will uefi pxe boot into syslinux menu.

However trying to boot from the default hard drive or chainloading the original bootmgfw.efi (renamed to bootmgr.efi) does not do anything and hangs. I can run tools like memtest and load memdisk and an ISO fine, but I would like to be able to chainload into wds boot and also be able to boot from the default hard disk as a default.

Has anyone has success with this? Would it be more advisable to use iPXE or grub instead?

RMPrepUSB now has an 'install grub2 to MBR' option

Hard disk vuoto/overlapping

Ciao Wonko,

Can't have overlapping partitions e Can't have a partition outside the disk!

Grazie

Easy2Boot - 5.6GB Windows 10 ISO on a FAT32 drive

Hello,

seems like this page describes how to add +4 GB files on FAT32 drives but I don't know which method should I use (the entire page looks really chaotic for me). Therefore I want to ask you which method should I use.

  • I've downloaded a Windows 10 Pro x86 + x64 ISO which size is 5.6GB
  • My drive is formatted as FAT32 for compatibility reasons (I had multiple PC's which couldn't boot a NTFS drive) so I can't just copy the ISO on it
  • I want to install Windows 10 using the VHD method for testing, and then maybe install it as a main OS
  • Currently I have Windows 8.1 installed in non-UEFI mode, I'm mentioning it because I think it might be important

So how do I copy the Windows 10 ISO file on my drive?

Network boot as option in Menu.lst

Is there a way to write a option in the Menu.lst to instigate a PXE network boot?

I have a challenge where i am unable to update the bios settings on a host of machines, but may require the ability to PXE these machines in the future. Is there a way to start the PXE boot (or equivalent) from Grub?

Thank you

RMPrepUSB - Persistence with Manjaro

Greetings,
Just as I stated here I am using RMPrepUSB to boot linux from a USB pendrive.
My Linux distro of choice is Manjaro and unfortunately I don't know how to make a persistence file for Manjaro to be used when booting with RMPrepUSB.
Could somebody please help me figuring this out?
Thanks in advance. :-)
Cheers

Grub4dos - run it from hdd

Greetings,

I am currently using RMPrepUSB to run Linux on a laptop which is not mine, it's from my employer.

The laptop came with Windows 7 Pro SP1 with 3 partitions - 1 hidden for boot manager, 1 for windows OS/applications and finally 1 for storing data.

Using a USB disk I can run Linux without having to touch the OS. With persistence turned on, I can run a Linux liveCD and make "permanent" changes to the OS which is something that everybody usually needs.

But using a 20MB/s USB pendisk it can be very sluggish. The persistence file can easily reach the 3 or 4 GB (updates, new apps, etc)...

Due to that, sometimes the experience can become a bit frustrating especially when you're dealing with a whole lot of small files that keep getting written/read to and from the USB drive.

Running it from the hdd would be easier and a whole lot faster, I'm sure. But doing that would be like installing Linux with Grub2 on dualboot, which is something that I am not much inclined to do because I wouldn't like my boss to find out that I have tweaked the computer.

Then I remembered that once I saw someone saying that we can install grub4dos by simply renaming grldr to ntldr and copying that to the boot partition of the hdd.

Would that work?

If so, what is the exact procedure?

Would that be:

- extract grub4dos to the boot partition of windows, using a linux livecd to be able to see that partition

- rename "ntldr" to "ntldr.original" and renaming "grldr" to "ntldr"

- what about the menu.lst? What entry would I need in order to boot the Windows OS?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

could we use IMGPTN for targeting UEFI bios and MBR BIOS

0
0

I'm searching a best solution to have an universal usb stick using easy2boot. By universal I mean it can boot in UEFI and in old computer BIOS as well.

Take Kon-Boot for example. On easy2boot website there is 2 solutions:

A) using the floppy image + mnu file ==> will work for MBR system

B ) create usb from kon boot script and make a IMGPTN of it.==>Will work for UEFI (as Win8 GPT), but it works for MBR OS too

So why don't use solution B only which works on very old computer and on new UEFI BIOS too?

So if I want an universal solution I should go to solution B which works for both old computer and new one in UEFI.

Or should I put both solution on my USB?

I've tested solution B on very old computer and that works (via CSM menu).

Ubuntu 16.04 - boot from hdd using grub4dos with persistence

0

I have successfully created an environment with a laptop so that I can dual boot between windows 7 and ubuntu desktop 16.04 using grub4dos.
It is fully documented on another topic here:
http://reboot.pro/to...un-it-from-hdd/
All is working fine. Both windows 7 and ubuntu can boot up properly and I can use them with no issues.
But I am still missing something on ubuntu: persistence across reboots.
When I try to add persistence to the ubuntu iso through the initramfs options it fails miserably on me by simply booting without the persistence file mounted.
As I have stated before, I am running things on different partitions so I will make a quick drawing of what the partitions/folders/files currently look like.

500GB hdd
|
|_100MB (system partition)
|   |_______grub (folder)
|   |         |_grldr (file)
|   |         |_menu.lst (file)
|   |_boot.ini (file)
|
|_250GB (boot partition aka C:)
|   |_Windows OS
|
|_240GB (data/baks partition aka D:)
|   |_______OS (folder)
|   |        |________live (folder)
|   |        |          |_________ubuntu-rw (folder)
|   |        |          |             |_casper-rw (file)
|   |        |          |
|   |        |          |_ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso (file)
|   |        |          |_manjaro-bspwm-community-16.06-x86_64.iso (file)
|   |        |          |_etc...

And this is how each file looks like right now.

file -> boot.ini
[boot loader]
Timeout=30
default=C:\grub\grldr
[operating systems]
C:\grub\grldr="grub4dos"
file -> menu.lst
title Back to Windows Boot Manager
find --set-root /bootmgr
chainloader /bootmgr
title Ubuntu
find --set-root /OS/live/ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso
map /OS/live/ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso (0xff) || map --mem /OS/live/ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz.efi file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed noprompt boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/OS/live/ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso persistent persistent-path=/OS/live/ubuntu-rw quiet --
initrd /casper/initrd.lz

I would post a journalctl -b0 but it is too long and the forum doesn't allow it.

Also ubuntu 16.04 seems to have ditched /var/log/boot.log so I am clueless of what to do to debug this.

Please let me know if you spot something wrong.

Bear in mind that this same iso file is also on a usb easy2boot pendrive and it is working just fine with persistence. This means it's not a bug in this release or something and since easy2boot uses grub4dos I guess it also rules out any grub4dos influence.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Introducing Docker for Windows Server 2016

0

Some cool Linux container technology is now also available on Windows:

Microsoft is announcing general availability of Windows Server 2016 at the Ignite conference in Atlanta. For Windows developers and IT-pros, the most exciting new Windows feature is containers, and containers on Windows Server 2016 are powered by Docker.

The first version of Docker was released in 2013, and in the 3 years since launch, Docker has completely transformed how Linux developers and ops build, ship and run apps. With Docker Engine and containers now available natively on Windows, developers and IT-pros can begin the same transformation for Windows-based apps and infrastructure and start reaping the same benefits: better security, more agility, and improved portability and freedom to move on-prem apps to the cloud.

For developers and IT-pros that build and maintain heterogenous deployments with both Linux and Windows infrastructure, Docker on Windows holds even greater significance: The Docker platform now represents a single set of tools, APIs and image formats for managing both Linux and Windows apps. As Linux and Windows apps and servers are dockerized, developers and IT-pros can bridge the operating system divide with shared Docker terminology and interfaces for managing and evolving complex microservices deployments both on-prem and in the cloud.

Running Containers on Windows Server

Docker running containers on Windows is the result of a two-year collaboration between Microsoft that involved the Windows kernel growing containerization primitives, Docker and Microsoft collaborating on porting the Docker Engine and CLI to Windows to take advantage of those new primitives and Docker adding multi-arch image support to Docker Hub.

The result is that the awesome power of docker run to quickly start a fresh and fully isolated container is now available natively on Windows:

Query Legacy BIOS from within Windows

0
0

I have multiple machines (capable of UEFI) but utilizing the legacy BIOS. What i need to find out, and ultimately change, is what the boot priority order is.

I would want to make PXE the primary boot option.

I have read this is possible with Dell and HP using their tools and powershell, referencing a 'namespace'. Problem is i am running this on a machine running a InsydeH20 bios.

Firstly are there any universal tools to read the options set in the BIOS and possibily amend them? Secondly is there a way to discover this illusive 'Namespace' and use the powershell to query its settings?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Can't find WinPE older version

I madly tried to find out the WinPE toolchain for Windows XP SP2 which is probably termed as Windows PE 1.5(2004), as per Wikipedia. But couldn't find it out. Surprisingly, Microsoft provides WAIK for Vista & Windows 7 as a download. Plz give me a link to download older versions of WinPE building tools. I've downloaded WAIK thrice but every time it showed a nasy error "Winpe.cab is corrupt". Cany anybody explain this?

Meet ORWL. The first open source, physically secure computer

If someone has physical access to your computer with secure documents present, it’s game over! ORWL is designed to solve this as the first open source physically secure computer. ORWL (pronounced or-well)

Seems good for physical security when your machine is powered off. When powered and online, same privacy issues are expected to come up. A default hardware config costs 700 USD, the best specs on their product cost 1200 USD.

grub UEFI + wimboot - error: kernel too old.

0
0

Hi there

I am keen to know if anyone could get wimboot + grub UEFI pxe boot working.

Heres my steps

download Fedora-Xfce-Live-x86_64-24-1.2.iso
extract \EFI\BOOT\
  - BOOTX64.EFI
  - grubx64.efi
  - grub.cfg

setup tftp to serve BOOTX64.EFI

Add entries in grub.cfg

menuentry 'wimboot 1' {
    linuxefi /boot/wimboot
}

menuentry 'wimboot 2' {
    linuxefi /boot/wimboot
    initrdefi \
        newc:bcd:/boot/boot/BCD \
        newc:boot.sdi:/boot/boot/boot.sdi \
        newc:boot.wim:/boot/boot.wim
}

After booting from UEFI pxe and selecting wimboot 1 or 2, there is an error message

error: kernel too old.
error: you need to load the kernel first.
Press any key to continue...
