BOOTICE: a boot sector manipulation utility [v0.78 released!]

0
0
Hello everyone! I'm glad to introduce you this utility to modify or backup/restore your MBR(Master Boot Record) or PBR(Partition Boot Record), it's name is BOOTICE. Wish you like it.

With BOOTICE, you can easily change your MBR/PBR to another type. Supported boot records are: Grub4DOS, SysLinux, PLoP Boot Manager, MS NT52/60, .... For example, with this utility, you can install Grub4DOS to your MBR or PBR, install NTLDR or BOOTMGR to your PBR, install SYSLINUX to PBR, install the MS-DOS boot record to your PBR, and so on.

And, BOOTICE allows you to rename the boot file, e.g., you can rename Grub4DOS's boot file from "grldr" to "ggldr", NTLDR boot record's boot file, from "NTLDR" to "SMLDR" or sth. else you like.

It also has the ability to re-partition and format your flash disk drive. You can even seperate your flash disk to 2 partitions(only 1 is accessible in Windows, the other one is hidden for private data or boot images). And another useful function is to backup or restore your MBR/PBR of your disk.

Will save an online registry hive to an offline hive file.
Will restore an offline hive file to an online hive (a backup will be made next to the source hive file).

Needs admin rights.
Works on windows 2000 and up.

Before you restore a hive, make sure you have a backup and that you know how to boot offline and restore your system files.

ProductPolicy viewer

Hi,

Following a discussion started here, I am releasing this Product Policy viewer.

It can read both an online and offline registry.

It will parse the following key : SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions\ProductPolicy.

What is good for?

Check enabled/disabled features on your windows (depending on which version you  have).

I am asking the modos over here if adding a write feature to this tool would be considered as encouraging illegal activities.

Note that I did not check yet is writing to an offline registry is actually an option.

Regards,

Erwan

File Category: Projects

multiPE is the first WinBuilder project which builds a PE from XP, Win2003, Vista, Win7 sources.
Currently only x86 sources are supported. From history, x64 source use is included in some scripts and perhaps may work. But full support of x64 is not intended for the near future.
x64 PEs do not offer remarkable advantages compared with x86 PEs (Which PE adresses more than 3 GB of memory?).
And they do not run on older 32-bit hardware.
Win8 is not taken into account as source. For me is is not suited to build a working rescue PE. And multiPE does not claim to build a light-weight Windows OS.

The project has three main parts:
  • Building the core. Depending on the source, fundamental files and registry entries are added to the target.
  • Adding custom apps and drivers
  • Building the final PE with PEFactory, either as single boot or as part of a multiboot media.
boot media is optionally ISO (CD / DVD) or UFD
The build is 'complete' including shortcuts, associations, etc. No shortcut generation, registry entries etc. are necessary during boot. That decreases boot time.

Several 'Speed Up Functions' are new developed for the multiPE project. Revolutionary is the 'RamTarget' functionality. A small PE3 including internet access can be built in less than one minute (On my system in 40 seconds).

multiPE is one of the very few projects which support the standard WinBuilder 'Certificate' functionality. That helps the user to proof whether the used scripts are 'from author'.

Server for single script downloads with WinBuilder's Download Center: http://multipe.exec-se.de/
You should use the download center after a download of the whole project.
Maybe in the mean time some fixes / addons are added to the project.
Caution: To upgrade to a newer version, never use the "single file download of all files". In a new version sometimes structures / folder trees etc. are changed, and a single file upgrade can destroy the structures.
To upgrade to a new version, only use the download offered here, and download into an empty directory.

This page's internal download links for older versions do not work.
Older versions you can download from http://multipe.exec-se.de/Complete/

Actual (living) documentation: http://multipe.exec-...ltiPE/index.htm

The package contains WinBuilder 083, a slightly modified clone of the official WinBuilder 082.
Do not use WinBuilder 083 for other projects. It cannot be guaranteed that it works and does not cause any harm.

Real DOS-mode Patch for MS-DOS 8.0

Patch from Microsoft to restore the "Real-mode functionality" ( Microsoft not recommended the use of third-party methods to restore some aspects of the Real-mode functionality) in IO.SYS extracted from Windows XP SP3 diskcopy.dll by replacing
First 2048 bytes from original unmodified Windows Me OEM CD IO.SYS.
This IO.SYS directly support real MS-DOS mode.(Comparison of x86 DOS operating systems - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Windows Me OEM CD IO.SYS can load automatically DBLBUFF.SYS and IFSHLP.SYS etc... for launch Windows 9x and display boot logo and startup text: Now preparing to start your new computer... Startup Menu has no differences with the Startup Menu Windows 98 SE.
Inside IO.SYS extracted from Windows XP, Vista & Seven diskcopy.dll and decompressed with The Decompressor for IO.SYS Version 8 by Rudolph R. Loew you can find not displayed string: Now preparing to start your new computer...Also Windows Me splash screen does not appear, DBLBUFF.SYS and IFSHLP.SYS don't load, Startup Menu disabled etc... first 2k check booting from floppy. But it is some file modified by Microsoft.
I tried booting to ms-dos prompt without dos configuration files (msdos.sys=winboot.ini, config.sys. autoexec.bat) & entered set command:
PATH=

PROMPT=$P$G

COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM
I need Patch to DisableLog straight from decompressed IO.SYS without using msdos.sys=winboot.ini

I install tftp64d on my server.OS is english windows server 2012 r2.My server ip is 192.168.1.31.The "IP pool start address" is 192.168.1.50,"size of pool" is 204.So i think dhcp pool is from 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1.254.

But after many days ,i found no pc or other devices can get ip from 192.168.1.240 to 192.168.1.254.This mean the tftpd64`s dhcp max size of pool is 180!

Suddenly problem with mount imdisk on start

0
0

Hi,

I have a weird problem with my imdisk installation.

I run a Windows Home Server 2011 (based on Windows Server 2008 R2), which I also use as MediaPortal TV server. I use imdisk to have my timeshiftbuffer in RAM. I run a script c:\imdisk\startimdisk.cmd from the task scheduler. This script has run unmodified for years now.

imdisk -a -s 2G -m e: -p "/fs:ntfs /V:Timeshift /q /y"
md e:\timeshift
net share timeshift=e:\timeshift /grant:Jeder,FULL

NTFS permissions are set correctly on both file and directory.

The task (which I also tried to delte an re-create with the same result) runs on system start with SYSTEM account and highest privileges.

Last week, I had issues with my homegroup settings and fiddled around on the server. On this occasion I unmounted the E: Ramdisk once and assigned another drive this letter (only temporary) and removed it again. On the next reboot, I had drive E nonaccessible with a blue questionmark. I found and deleted some registry entries (HKLM\ControlSet01\Control\SessionManager\DOS devices) Key E:, Value \Devices\ImDisk0 and similar entries on

the registrie pointing to E: as I wanted to get rid of this ghost device. Maybe I deleted something there which I shouldn't have...

When I run the script above when logged into the server, it completes without any problem. I I run it from the task scheduler, I always get a 0x2 result code, while the event log in windows tells me that the script has run completely with this return code (no access denied, no file not found etc).

I uninstalled imdisk and rebooted, installed the lastest version, no change.

I have put a pipe to create a log file. When run from a logged on user, everthing is normal. When run by the task scheduler, only the commands of the script itself are being logged (weird...).

I have tried putting back the registry mentioned above, which gives me back e: with a blue questionmark. But it does not change the behaviour of the startup initialization failing.

The driver is set to start automatically.

I have no more idea what to do about this task failing. Any solution or workaround is appreciated.

Edit : an old thread but this tool was never posted to the downloads file on reboot.pro. Now catching up...

Based on MS WDK (http://msdn.microsof.../ee...7(v=VS.85).aspx), I wrote a command line tool that will allow one to read and write to an offline registry hive.

Command line usage :

OfflineReg a_hive_file a_key_path a_verb a_value_name [a_value]

example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key getvalue a_value_name
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" key\subkey getvalue a_value_name
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_string_value_name a_new_value
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_dword_value a_dword_value 4
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_qword_value a_qword_value 11
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_binary_value 0a,0b,0c,0d,0e,0f 3
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key_path setvalue a_multi_value_name "aa bb cc dd" 7
(setvalue will createvalue if value does not exist yet)
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key deletevalue a_value
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key deletekey a_subkey
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key deletekeys
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key createkey a_subkey
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key enumkeys
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key enumvalues
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_reg_file import
Example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key_path create

A real life example :
OfflineReg "D:\Windows\system32\config\system" ControlSet001\Control\ProductOptions getvalue "ProductType".

Should display :
"ProductType"=WinNT

Erwan.

IntegrateDrv - Integrate mass-storage text-mode or PNP drivers into windows 2000 \ XP \ 2003 setup.
This program was designed to be operated "in the field", using the original Windows 2000 \ XP \ 2003 installation media, it doesn't require burning a CD.

What this program can do:
1. Integrate AHCI / storage (text-mode or PNP) drivers "in the field" before windows installation.
2. Integrate PNP network card drivers so Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 could be installed and run from a network drive (e.g. iSCSI, see here for additional information).
3. Set USB 2.0 components to boot-start so Windows XP / 2003 could be installed and run from a USB 2.0 drive. (see here for more info)
4. Integrate vendor provided (e.g. AMD) USB 3.0 PNP drivers so Windows XP / 2003 could be installed and run from a USB 3.0 drive. (see here for more info)

How this program works:
What the program does, is to integrate the drivers to the temporary Windows Installation directories (the '$WIN_NT$.~BT' and '$WINT_NT$.~LS' directories that are created when running winnt32), so after you run winnt32 [usually from WinPE] and before you reboot to start the text-mode phase of installation, you run IntegrateDRV, integrate the AHCI / Storage drivers, and voila, windows setup now detects your AHCI controller! (this is the fastest method to integrate text-mode drivers that I know of)

Additional Information:

Yet another tool to generate a minimalist winpe iso using the Windows Assessment and Deployment Toolkit (ADK) / Winpe4 or Windows Automated Installation Kit / Winpe3.
The batch also uses wimlib to add extra files within the boot.wim file.

Alternatively, one can also use the Windows Repair Disk or Windows DVD to build a Winpe (no need for WAIK or ADK then).
One can also add Winpe packages or add Windows drivers.

The batch will :
-create a winpe using the copype winpe command from MS ADK or MS WAIK,
-modify boot.wim to add a tinyshell (see screenshot) so that one can launch explorer++, cmd, taskmgr, penetwork, or shutdown/reboot,
-create winpe iso (less than 200 MB).

Uncompress to x:\quickpe, stuff your tools (optional) in pe_extra folder, and launch make.cmd.
Get winpe.iso in x:\quickpe\%processor_architecture%.

Future possible evolutions : turn into a GUI, ...

FAIL! It fails every time! I tried to build win8 using winbuilder using different iso files.

They include:

1. 9200.16384.WIN8_RTM.120725-1247_X64FRE_ENTERPRISE_EVAL_EN-US-HRM_CENA_X64FREE_EN-US_DV5

3. -Getintopc.com-en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440

Shell swapper appears at boot:

2015-11-28%2014_19_17-test%20Running%20-

Yet no matter which shell I select to launch, the same error it brings out:

2015-11-28%2014_19_51-test%20Running%20-So I start the task manager and run explorer.exe through it:

2015-11-28%2014_20_20-test%20Running%20-

Afterwards, I start internet explorer. It ends up looking like this:

2015-11-28%2014_27_40-test%20Running%20-

There are no programs:

2015-11-28%2014_27_57-test%20Running%20-

(c't) How to change screen resolution?

0

Hi!

I created a boot CD (USB stick) using the Winbuilder package from the august 2011 issue of the german c't magazine.

The problem is, I can't find a way to change the screen resolution after booting it.

Where to look? I checked all the menus and icons.

Sorry if this is specific to their package. I'm just puzzled, especially since their article claims, the resolution can be changed at runtime.

David

SharpBoot

Current version: 3.3

SharpBoot is an easy to use utility for creating multiboot ISO files or bootable USB keys. It's another free and open-source alternative to Xboot and it's simple: you just need to drag-n-drop ISO/IMG files and click on a button, and you can directly try it on QEMU that is integrated.

You can choose between Syslinux and Grub4Dos, Fat12, Fat16 or Fat32, 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 and even the background image (ImageMagick is integrated so that images can be made compatible with Grub4Dos) !

It's available in the following languages :

  • English
  • French / Français
  • German / Deutsch
  • Romanian / Română
  • Simplified Chinese / 中文(简体)   (70% translated)

Here's what it looks like :

8Ag2Dsi.png

As you can see, the UI is quite like Xboot's, but there's some more features.

TODO:

  • Add UEFI support
  • Add "USB tools" form with format, boot management etc stuff

CHANGELOG:

  • 3.3 - 2015-11-29
    • Added Traditional Chinese translation, thanks to Jen Hung-Chia

Currently it's not finished I need some beta-testers and translators.

Copy locked system files tis now possible?

Hi all  ,

Here's what I think is an intersting find?

Ever drop on a file or collection of files that you want to copy, that spits back an error message sumfin like "File in use" unable to copy which can be a bit of a nuisance!

I like the commandline quite a lot so this little gizmo is right up my alley & maybe up yours, well how do we achieve this then, "Copying locked files"?!
Since XP, Windows has supported a technology called Volume Shadow Copy, which is used to power the previous versions feature in Vista as well as System Restore and backups. What it does is take a temporary snapshot of the file or drive, and then allow an application to read from the snapshot even while other applications are accessing or modifying the file.

What we can do is use a command line utility called HoboCopy that utilizes this service to copy the file.

Well maybe just maybe it could be used to say back up your active registry why not give it a go & find out, an interesting topic for a homework project LOL?

And where can one find out details about this Gizmo:?

Try Here:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...ked-in-windows/

Noteably it is open source 2

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=204974

There are dependancies of course but isn't there always, kinda looks nifty to me?

Tis also avaialable for Vista also

N-Joy!

Regards & Best Wishes,

ispy

Addendum UMMmmm Maybe its the case that some people would prefer a Gui interface so as an alternative to HoboCopy what about this:

http://en.kioskea.net/telecharger/telechar...712-shadow-copy

Maybe this would suffice

N-Joy!
