This is a simple WinPE script that will replace the generic Windows Notepad with a more advanced AkelPad text editor.

This is a small and fast open-source text editor, which functionality can be extended by plugins (however, this script doesn't support AkelPad plugins).

The script will replace the notepad.exe file in the target System32 folder both in x86 and x64 builds.

Tested on Win7PE SE only, will probably work with Win8PE SE and higher.

Firefox Web browser has security, speed and new features that will change the way you use the web.

This script supports current 32 bit Firefox versions and has been tested with v40 to v41. You should be able to use it with official milestone releases as with beta versions. Confirmed working with Win8.1SE x86.

Note: If you're like me, you might want to include the add-on Classic Theme Restorer Customize Australis via the option to "include XPI extensions" in order to restore the traditional, "old-fashioned" GUI. To integrate it silently, you have to modify a few lines in the file \defaults\preferences\options.js. (Or post in the thread if you don't know how to do this.)

Requirements
  • sufficient RAM > 1 GB if you want to use Flash or Firefox add-ons
  • Flash installed on host system if you want to add the Flash plugin to your build
  • Internet connection for fetching the Mozilla installer (optional)
  • additionally my script Sumatra PDF universal if you want to equip Firefox with the ability to display PDF files (as the built-in way is somewhat crappy at times)
This is the best and most convenient script for Mozilla Firefox around: Set everything you want to, include bookmarks, add-ons, display various file formats in the browser thanks to the SumatraPDF plugin, and utilize additional search plugins (however, starting with Firefox 40 you need to touch the omni.ja file).

Enjoy!

Hello.

I have 2 smalls problems (I have 3 in fact but I explain first already in the http://reboot.pro/topic/15879-change-default-mouse-cursor/ thread)

Screen Res

I try to set to 1024x768 the final screen resolution using the "Main Configuration" panel but at the end I have a 800x600 ?? I looked in all next building step but I can't find where the "Main Configuration" settings are override. I try with all Tweaks plugins disabled without success.

Keyboards

I would like to install some extra keyboards, German, Spanish, Danish etc for that I find the KLS for PE Builder script. But I have a error when I try to install the script. "Unable to register the type library: RegisterTypeLib failed; code 0x8002801C." So I can't use it  :geek:

For information I'm on Windows 7 SP1 X64 and using Winbuilder 082, the source is a  Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x86.

Anyone have any idea to solve this 2(in fatc 3 :smiling9: ) problems ?

Thanks :sos:

Disk Probe allows you to view and modify hard disk or file sectors. It is from the Microsoft NT Resource Kit.
The program can edit physical disks, Logical Volumes (partitions) and files.
Data can be displayed in hexadecimal, ASCII and as decoded MBR, NTFS or FAT boot sectors.
If you want to display the help file you need WinHlp32.exe.

Dealing with invalid registry keys

Background:
Here's Mark Russinovich's explanation of the issue; In the Win32 API strings are interpreted as NULL-terminated ANSI (8-bit) or wide character (16-bit) strings. In the Native API names are counted Unicode (16-bit) strings. While this distinction is usually not important, it leaves open an interesting situation: there is a class of names that can be referenced using the Native API, but that cannot be described using the Win32 API.

In short that means that native functions (for instance kernel mode) can deal with embedded null terminated ansi strings, whereas win32 api can't. So by using native functions it is possible to create names (for instance a registry key) that become invalid when accessed in usermode (regedit). That text was taken from the description of RegDelNull which really sparked this off; http://technet.micro...ernals/bb897448 That tool has its shortcomings, and I am certain RegKeyFixer can perform better at dealing with these invalid key names.

Proof of Concept:
Inspired by good old RegHide; http://technet.micro...s/dd581628.aspx I wrote my own (CreateInvalidKey.exe) which is included in the download. Run the PoC and verify with regedit that you have an invalid registry key. Then run RegKeyFixer and specify the correct path, and remember to specify -r as switch (rename), to convert the key into a valid one. RegDelNull seems completely broken on x64, and halfbroken on x86 (could identify and delete the key, but not rename it). To fix the invalid key run this from the commandline;

RegKeyFixer64.exe \Registry\Machine\software\joakim -r -n

Now try access the renamed key, and verify that there exist some data that was previously not visible.

Details:
The included tools utilizes some powerfull native functions in ntdll.dll. Theses functions are what lets you deal with invalid key names, because we can interact with the OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES structure; http://msdn.microsof...9(v=vs.85).aspx .
Since it uses native NT functions, it does not work with user friendly registry names like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKCU etc. It will only take the Windows internal registry names, those starting with \Registry\... Below is a listing of the most important translations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \registry\machine

HKEY_USERS \registry\user

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \registry\user\user_sid

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \registry\machine\software\classes

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG \Registry\Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current

The user sid is the one similar to this: S-1-5-21-2895024241-3518395705-1366494917-288

The syntax is:
RegKeyFixer.exe path -switch1 -switch2

Path can be in the format specified above

Switch1:
  • -r switch is for renaming invalid key names
  • -d switch is for deleting invalid key names
  • -f switch is for just finding the invalid key names (just search, no repair)
Switch2
  • -s switch is for recursive mode
  • -n switch is for regular enumeration of subkeys

Some examples:

Recursively find and rename invalid keys found at HKLM\SOFTWARE and all its subkeys

RegKeyFixer.exe \Registry\Machine\SOFTWARE -r -s

Just find invalid key names at HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services (no recursion, just enumerate 1 level down)

RegKeyFixer.exe \Registry\Machine\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services -f -n

The tools have been tested on Windows 7 SP1 x64 and XP SP3 x86.

Extra PoC:
There is a second PoC included that generate keys that are more or less impossible to fix on a live system. I suspect the only way to fix such keys, are to do it in offline mode. That means my program is not able to fix those keys. If you know about a program than can fix those keys, then let me know.

How disable IDE controller (Secondary Master) in MS VPC 2007?

$

Some time ago I wrote something about MS VPC 2007:

For testing I use a MS VPC 2007 virtual machine but this machine have no possible remove CD-ROM drive in settings. Now I tried VMware Workstation 8 - this one allows remove CD-ROM drive in settings :-)

Today I found a solution how to disable the CD-ROM device (IDE controller). You have to enter incorrect absolute string in the IDE controller ID 1, location 0 in the file .vmc eg. a few small letters. In the example I used the word "dummy" and close tag </absolute>:

<ide_controller id="1">
    <location id="0">
        <drive_type type="integer">2</drive_type>
        <pathname>
            <absolute type="string">dummy</absolute>
            <relative type="string" />
        </pathname>
    </location>
</ide_controller>

Comparison of the presence of CD-ROM:

CMOS (device list and boot order):

no_cd_cmos1.png cd_cmos1.png

no_cd_cmos2.png cd_cmos2.png

GRUB4DOS (cdrom --init):

no_cd_grub4dos.png cd_grub4dos.png

WInXP x86 (My computer, Device Manager and Disk management):

no_cd_winxp.png cd_winxp.png

Now, after choosing the menu: CD -> Capture ISO Image... no display window Select CD Image to Capture.

Tested in MS VirtualPC 2007 for x64 version 6.0.192.0

Please test other version MS VPC and report.
Thx.

External HDD vs Internal HDD and External Adaptor

$

I wanted to know your opinion on something guys.

I'm trying to create an all-purpose portable storage media for booting images with grub4dos, keeping documents and applications etc. I will be working mostly with small files so an usb memory drive is out of discussion.

So my question is, external HDD vs a solution combining a normal internal 2.5'' hdd with an usb adaptor?

What I've found online is something like this http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/pc-accessory/kama-connect-3.html

I would incline twords the second option because I like freedom, not being tied up to a specific hdd rack, like size, or capacity and stuff. Those that adata, wd and some other brands come with are virtually made to never replace the drives within. Which does not appeal to me.

What do you think?

Overcoming the Windows FAT32 32GB limit (ImDisk)

$

The Windows .cmd batch script for Easy2Boot, MakePartImage.cmd, uses ImDisk to create a backing file and format it as FAT32. Recently someone tried the script using a large (33GB) ISO file as the source and hit the problem of Windows/ImDisk not being able to format the raw 33GB ramdisk volume as FAT32.

I was wondering what the easiest way would be to modify my script to overcome this problem?

The same user contacted me to say that he used Arsenal Recon image mounter to mount a 33GB ImDisk raw volume and then managed to format it using the 3rd party tool AOMEI.

What I would like however, is to not install any driver (if possible), or at least only install it when required and prompt the user first, and then format the volume from within the script automatically. I also need to be able to distribute it legally within the MPI download, etc.

Any suggestions?

Laptop started freezing on boot

My laptop recently started freezing on boot when i leave it a longer time powered off. For example, if i turn it off in the evening and power it on in the morning it never boots from the first time. It freezes before the bios screen appear and i have to power it off and turn it on again. And sometimes it boots successfully from the third or forth time.
But if i power off the laptop and after few minutes turn it on it boots normally. So, the problem happens if i leave the laptop a longer time powered off.
What does it mean? Is it a problem with the bios or some hardware part is failing, maybe the hard disk?

Install XP in VHD using XP Setup ISO file and WinVBlock driver

VHD_XP_Create.exe - Make VHD file and make Grub4dos Boot Menu on HDD or USB
for Install of XP in VHD by using XP Setup ISO file and WinVBlock driver

Download VHD_XP_Setup - http://reboot.pro/files/file/315-vhd-xp-setup-install-xp-in-vhd/

More Info - http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=25345
-
Possible Scenario's
- Boot from USB and Install XP in VHD located on NTFS drive of USB or HDD
- Boot with Grub4dos Menu on NTFS USB-Stick for Install of XP in VHD located on NTFS Drive of Internal Harddisk
- Boot with Portable USB-harddisk and Direct Install XP in VHD located on NTFS System Drive of USB-Harddisk

First Prepare XP Setup ISO file with integrated DriverPacks as described in Section 2. How to prepare XP Setup Source ?
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23553
and Copy XP Setup ISO file to the root of internal harddisk drive of your computer.

Direct Install of XP in VHD on USB requires to Integrate Wait4UFD driver in XP Setup Source
http://reboot.pro/topic/18107-integratedrv-install-xp-2003-to-a-usb-30-disk-and-boot-from-it/#entry167235

Selections to be made in VHD_XP_Create.exe
Boot Drive - FAT32 or NTFS - can be USB-stick so that there are no changes needed in the Windows installation on the internal harddisk
System Drive - NTFS - where VHD file is created e.g your internal harddisk drive
XP Setup ISO file - located on internal harddisk drive so that fast loading into RAM is enabled

Procedure to Make 2 GB VHD file and make Grub4dos Boot Menu on HDD or USB
for Install of XP in VHD by using XP Setup ISO file and WinVBlock driver

0. Run VHD_XP_Setup.exe and Extract to simple path on internal Harddisk - gives folder VHD_XP_Setup
In Win 7/8 OS Set User Account Control Off and Reboot
1. Use imdiskinst.exe to Install ImDisk driver (if not present already)
- Imdisk is used to mount VHD and HDD Image files in a virtual drive
2. If desired use first UFD_FORMAT.exe to make USB-Stick bootable with Grub4dos Menu and that can be used as Target Boot Drive
- Then Run VHD_XP_Create.exe to create XPSRC1.vhd and Grub4dos Boot Menu for Install of XP in VHD
- Select Boot Drive and NTFS System Drive and select XP Setup ISO file located in root of Harddisk Drive
3. Reboot and in Grub4dos menu select Start XP Setup on XPSRC1.vhd - WinVBlock driver
- XPSRC1.vhd has already NTFS compressed format, so you should NOT format at Setup, just keep settings
- Format XPSRC1.img inside XP Setup cannot be used, it results in corrupt message
4. After Reboot select Continue XP Setup and then Reboot to Start XP from Image XPSRC1.vhd

Option to Install 130 extra MassStorage drivers to make Universal XP VHD that can boot from USB on all hardware
When WINDOWS\DriverPacks store with subfolder M (MassStorage) for support of SCSI- en RAID-controllers is found in XP Source VHD,
then option MassStor of USB_XP_Fix.exe Or VHD_XP_Compact.exe will add CriticalDeviceDatabase registry and Services to allow booting on all hardware.

After XP Setup has finished then Boot with other Windows OS and use:

5. USB_XP_Fix.exe to enable booting from USB and to Install MassStorage drivers.
Select XPSRC1.vhd Image file and USB Boot Drive and click GO to create Grub4dos Boot Menu on USB Boot Drive.
If desired Copy XPSRC1.vhd to NTFS USB Drive for having Portable USB Drive booting with XP VHD.
http://reboot.pro/topic/9830-universal-hdd-image-files-for-xp-and-windows-7/ Or http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23553

Problems you may have
1. - VHD must be contiguous = unfragmented - Use WinContig to solve such problem.
2. - In case of VHD located on USB then some mobo will give VHD Disk 2048 MB No Access message in Partition Selection dialogue of XP Setup.
In that case reboot and in VHD_XP_Create.exe use Internal Harddisk drive as System Drive where to Create VHD for XP Setup.
It is important to use in that case XP Setup ISO without integrated Wait4UFD driver.
After XP Setup has finished then use USB_XP_Fix.exe to enable booting from USB and to Install MassStorage drivers.
Select XPSRC1.vhd Image file and USB Boot Drive and click GO to create Grub4dos Boot Menu on USB Boot Drive.
Copy XPSRC1.vhd to NTFS USB Drive for having Portable USB Drive booting with XP VHD.
3. VHD and XP Setup ISO file cannot be located on GPT partition - UEFI computers must be in BIOS compatible mode to enable booting with Grub4dos Menu.
Use MBR partition of HDD or USB as location for VHD and XP Setup ISO file.
4. In GUI-mode I386\asms not found error means that Virtual CD is not found in GUI-mode
Select Checkbox - Load XP Setup ISO in RAM might help to solve this issue.
Otherwise use WinNTSetup3 to prepare NT Setup folders in VHD mounted in ImDisk virtual drive - See Modified Procedure below
5. Black Screen - Freezing in TXT-mode of XP Setup - Fix TXT-mode by using map --e820cycles=0 in Grub4dos Menu before hook

Modified Procedure to Make 2 GB VHD file and make NT Setup Grub4dos Boot Menu on HDD or USB and using WinVBlock driver.
First WinNTSetup3 is used with XP Setup ISO file to prepare XP Setup folders in VHD mounted in ImDisk virtual drive.

0. If desired use first UFD_FORMAT.exe to make USB-Stick bootable with Grub4dos Menu and that can be used as Target Boot Drive
1. Then Use VHD_XP_Create.exe where XP Setup ISO file is NOT Selected in this case.
Select Target Drives and Grub4dos Boot Menu Checkbox and use GO
to make XPSRC1.vhd on NTFS System Drive and to make NT Setup Grub4dos Boot Menu on Target Boot Drive.
2. Mount XPSRC1.vhd as ImDisk Virtual Drive - if needed use imdiskinst.exe to Install ImDisk driver
3. Use WinNTSetup v3.2 - click on XP tab - Right-click to Select XP Setup ISO file
Select as Boot Drive and as Installation Drive the ImDisk Virtual drive of mounted XPSRC1.vhd
Click Setup to prepare $WIN_NT$.~BT and $WIN_NT$.~LS folders in XP VHD
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/149612-winntsetup-v32/
4. Reboot to Install XP in VHD - Start TXT-mode and then reboot 2x with Grub4dos menu Boot Windows XP

NT Setup Grub4dos Menu on USB-drive for Install of XP in VHD when WinNTSetup3 was used to prepare for XP Setup in VHD

title Start - TXT-mode XP Setup on XPSRC1.vhd - WinVBlock driver - 2000 MB
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /XPSRC1.vhd

map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd0)
map /XPSRC1.vhd (hd0)
map --rehook
chainloader (0xff)

title Boot Windows XP from Image - XPSRC1.vhd - WinVBlock driver - 2000 MB

File Name: MBR Rebuilder (NTLDR, BOOTMGR)
File Submitter: Ralphsoft
File Submitted: 05 Oct 2014
File Category: Boot tools

MBR Rebuilder helps you to rebuild the boot sector or "MBR" of your USB/Hard Drive.
This tool does not provide any boot files such as bootmgr.

Tool developed by Ralphsoft.

What it does:

The tool allows you to repair your MBR or boot sector of your device. You can choose between NTLDR (NT52), BOOTMGR (NT60). Note that we do not provide the boot files, you have to add them manually. Also note that it needs to extract a required tool. Make sure your working directory or temporary folder is not read only. This tool needs to be ran as administrator. Be careful while using this tool! IT WILL WIPE AWAY YOUR CURRENT MBR/BOOT SECTOR!!!

What is does not:

It does not hack your USB or HDD or destroys your disks. But you need to know that "Ralphsoft" is NOT responsible for any damage to your system. If you face problems, just post it below.

What it requires:

- Administrator Privileges.
- A read/write working directory and temporary directory.
- At least Windows XP or higher.

Thank you for using this tool!
