Win8PE freezes if I load PENetworks before Explorer Shell

$

Hello Guys,

First off I'll explain the project to you:

my company currently gave me the task to create a bootable Windows PE Stick. The Stick should have the following features:

Independable Bootable ISOs using Grub:

Hiren's Boot CD

Ultimate Boot CD

Windows 7 AiO CD

Windows 8 AiO CD

Symantec System Recovery

That works sofar.

For the Win8PE Enviroment it should run:

Hirens Boot CD Tools

Symantec Ghost

Now to my Issue.

The Bootstick is requiered to map network shares at boot up. To do so I have to run PENetwork before the Explorer Shell. But when I do so PENetwork will run but the WinPE Enviroment just freezes. I tried it with and without the automatically mapping of the shares and that doesnt seem to matter. No login credentials are requiered to access the network share, so that shouldnt be the problem.

Im pretty clueless as to why it just freezes, maybe you could help me.

Kind regards.

Hello Gents,

Following this thread http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=11212, I have decided to use MS WDK (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee...7(v=VS.85).aspx) to write a command line tool that will allow one to read and write to an offline registry hive.

Version 0.9 here : http://reboot.pro/files/file/313-offlinereg/

Command line usage :

OfflineReg a_hive_file a_key_path a_verb a_value_name [a_value]

example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key getvalue a_value_name
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" key\subkey getvalue a_value_name
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_string_value_name a_new_value
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_dword_key a_dword_value 4
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_qword_key a_qword_value 11
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key setvalue a_binary_key 0a,0b,0c,0d,0e,0f 3
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key_path setvalue a_multi_value_name "aa bb cc dd" 7
(setvalue will createvalue if value does not exist yet)
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key deletevalue a_value
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key deletekey a_subkey
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key createkey a_subkey
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key enumkeys
example : OfflineReg "c:\temp\system" a_key enumvalues

A real life example :
OfflineReg "D:\Windows\system32\config\system" ControlSet001\Control\ProductOptions getvalue "ProductType".

Should display :
"ProductType"=WinNT

Feedback, suggestions, etc welcome.

Regards,
Erwan.

Reverse image search

https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/1325808?hl=en

Reverse image search

You can use a picture as your search to find related images from around the web.

How reverse image search works

When you search using an image, your search results may include:

  • Similar images
  • Sites that include the image
  • Other sizes of the image you searched for

Search using an image works best when the image is likely to show up in other places on the web. So you'll get more results for famous landmarks than you will for personal images like your latest family photo.

Reverse image search using your computer

You can search using an image on these computer browsers:

  • Chrome 5+
  • Internet Explorer 9+
  • Safari 5+
  • Firefox 4+
  1. Visit images.google.com or click the camera icon in the search box on any Images results page.
  2. Click Upload an image.
  3. Click Choose file.
  4. Select the image from your computer.

If you're on Chrome or Firefox 4+, you can drag an image from your computer into the search box.

  1. Visit images.google.com.
  2. On your computer, click the image you want to search for.
  3. While holding down the mouse, drag the image into the search box.
  1. On any website, right-click an image and select Copy image URL.
  2. Visit images.google.com or click the camera icon in the search box on any Images results page.
  3. Click Paste image URL.
  4. Paste the URL you copied into the box.
  5. Click Search by image.
Chrome
  1. Right-click any image you see on a website or in search results.
  2. Click Search Google for this image.
  3. A new tab will open with your results.
Firefox
  1. Download the Search by Image extension.
  2. Right-click any image you see on a website or in search results.
  3. Click Search Google with this image.
  4. A new tab will open with your results.

Chenall's builds: 0.4.5c or 0.4.6a?

$

All the latest Chenall's builds of Grub4dos are designated as either 0.4.5c or 0.4.6a. What's the difference between the two?

http://code.google.com/p/grub4dos-chenall/downloads/list

I have picked up the latest build "grub4dos-0.4.6a-2014-01-17.7z" and it seems to be working ok. Is it considered a stable release or a beta?

Grub4Dos project seems a bit confusing for new users. Chenall is listed as an "active member" on the original GNA website which is always picked up first by search engines (see the link below), but for some reason he keeps uploading the latest releases to another website.

A few questions about installing Clover

$

0

So, today I tried (briefly) to boot Windows via Clover on a USB, as suggested by Wonko. I saw steve6375's tutorial and read a bit. I used the BootDiskUtility to download Clover and install it to a formatted USB drive. I noted that the util created 2 partitions on the USB (what was on the 2nd partition, I'm not sure). The USB booted, I got the Clover GUI, and chose to boot Windows via EFI. The 7 logo appeared..............and hung up at the end of the logo. 2 more tries, it froze both times. I had to do an sfc /scannow upon using UEFI DUET to boot into Windows, a corrupt file was found and repaired, no issues so far, and there were no corrupt files before attempting to boot via the USB (I checked beforehand to be sure). So no big deal here................

However, what I'd like to try to do is to maybe replace DUET with Clover, since it's my understanding that Clover is basically DUET but with some fixed issues. It appears to me that steve6375 was trying to show how to boot Clover from USB to boot Easy2Boot UEFI payloads, which isn't what I'm after. I would like to install Clover into my EFI partition as a complete DUET replacement. I've decided that it will be necessary to continue booting 7 via DUET in the future, since 7 on my PC has issues when booted in real UEFI mode. My BIOS has an option to either enable UEFI or not, which is activated, and another option to prefer legacy boot over real UEFI. So I can leave UEFI activated, but DUET will still get first priority for booting if "legacy preferred" is the first option, native UEFI would only boot afterwards if a valid legacy boot option isnt available. Since both DUET and Clover are essentially booting via BIOS and not UEFI, then this should work. I am trying to set up my EFI partition in such a way that all other non-Windows OSes will boot in native UEFI, but leave Windows to be booted via DUET/Clover. I don't think milindsmart's approach to booting Windows on GPT via BIOS will be necessary. DUET accomplishes the same thing as what he is after, but in a much different way. I may still mess around with the approaches in his thread just because I can, but I don't see it as necessary.

So, how can I accomplish this? I'm just not sure of the steps to take. I'm only interested in tested Clover from a USB to see if it works and how reliable it will be, if it proves helpful then the next step is to transition it into the EFI so it can be auto-loaded from the disk on powerup. I'm not sure how I can get CLOVER/DUET to boot only when I want to use Windows, but boot in native UEFI otherwise for other OSes. I'm sure I can also install additional boot managers/loaders like GRUB2 (preferred) and Refind for this purpose. The ideal goal is to use either GRUB2 or Refind for native UEFI, possibly even chainloading Clover for use with Windows. And this could all be done without having to use F12 to manually select legacy/UEFI.

I read something about needing to install grub4dos into the protective MBR, Syslinux currently lives there for booting DUET. I dont mind replacing it but dont want to botch my partition table or EFI partition while doing so.

It's somewhat troubling to me that Clover failed to load Windows correctly, as well as the logo hang, even though DUET loads Windows reliably. Clover is supposed to be based on DUET. Maybe I just didnt do something correctly. I was glad to see that Clover has native mouse support, I have a Logitech trackball device and the cursor worked in Clover, although VERY slowly. Can this be fixed? And the theme was quite ugly, that would definitely need to be replaced, LOL.

Thanks for any advice on how to proceed...............

EDIT: Windows is currently installed on a Samsung 850 EVO SSD, and the boot mode is AHCI, not IDE or regular SATA. So if Clover doesn't support AHCI then it's a no-go. I know for certain that DUET works with AHCI, at least the latest builds do. I'm hoping this won't be an issue.

Not sure where to post: Newest version of Symantec Ghost 12

The newest version of Symantec Ghost 12.X supports UEFI / GPT finally! We've been worried about this as we start to move more and more to 64 bit and UEFI.

You must get the entire Solution Suite v3 and install if somewhere, then get the Ghost32.exe. Ghost64.exe etc. files out of the created boot media's WIM file.  There is probably an easier way to do it but this was it for me.  We never have used the Ghostcast server, we just write to network shares or attahed USB drives.

I've simply taken my tried and true ghost script and plunked the new Ghost files in it as attachments and it works fine.

Revised July 8, 2015

It is now apparent that a major threat exists because of the posting by cyber criminals of HackingTeam proprietary software on the Internet the night of July 6. HackingTeam's investigation has determined that sufficient code was released to permit anyone to deploy the software against any target of their choice.

Before the attack, HackingTeam could control who had access to the technology which was sold exclusively to governments and government agencies. Now, because of the work of criminals, that ability to control who uses the technology has been lost. Terrorists, extortionists and others can deploy this technology at will if they have the technical ability to do so.

and,.. what they actually claim to do was THIS: http://www.hackingteam.com/images/stories/galileo.pdf

I don't think they're friend of anyone :( I no longer trust Windows or Android

Buidling/modifying floppy images with mtools (as replacement for WinImage/Imdisk/...)

Mtools compiled for Windows (small patch applied to avoid crashing of mcopy when doing recursive copies):
http://ubcdcreator.s...-crash-patch.7z

Update: mtools 4.0.18 for Windows can now be found in the download section:

http://reboot.pro/files/file/267-mtools/

Mtools 4.0.17 compiled for Windows
http://ubcdcreator.stopspazzing.com/mtools/mtools-4.0.17-win32.7z

Mtools manual page:
http://www.gnu.org/s...ual/mtools.html

Tutorial: Editing a 2880 kb floppy image of UBCD (FDUBCD FreeDOS image):
http://www.ultimateb...php?f=13&t=4077

That tutorial makes use of the more advanced parts of mtools than what is shown below.
mtools can replace the "need" for WinImage in many cases, when working with floppy images.

Easy example:

For example, it could be used to make easily make a F6 floppy image with WinVBlock or Firadisk.

For the WinVBlock working on Windows 7 tutorial, you need to make a F6 floppy image
http://reboot.pro/13738/

Contents of your WinVBlock F6 floppy:

* WinVBlk.cat
* WinVBlk.exe
* WinVBlk.Inf
* WVBlk32.sys
* sc.exe
* txtsetup.oem

Create and format a empty 1440 kb floppy image file with mformat:

mformat -C -f 1440 -v WINVBLOCK -i WinVBlock.img ::

If you already have an 1440k empty floppy image file, you won't need the "-C" switch:

mformat -f 1440 -v WINVBLOCK -i WinVBlock.img ::

Now we can copy the wanted files to the image with mcopy:

mcopy -i WinVBlock.img WinVBlk.cat WinVBlk.exe WinVBlk.Inf WVBlk32.sys sc.exe txtsetup.oem ::

Winbuilder no inicia-WinBuilder not start

Hi, I'm new here

The problem is that after the WinBuilder down and click on "Winbuilder.exe" then nothing happens, and even after several attempts.

(I tested eh 2 pc on my network)

Eh I read in forums that need the "Windows AIK" also down from Microsoft and install complete network by the Frame 4.5 ...

Likewise, the "Winbuilder.exe" does nothing (I see the hard disk led to a process but nothing happens)

Me and tired of looking at Internet forums but apparently nobody happens and all the WinBuilder happy installed without problem.

An important fact is that when I try to delete the folder where the WinBuilder (place it in c: d: etc.)

will not let me delete arguing that another process is using that folder and that process is Java, which leads me to believe that attempts to start but is blocked for some reason.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Debian root login directory

Hi Guys (and Gals)

I am just trying to find out if there is a way to set the default "login directory" when you login as root under a Debian system.

For this to be a clearer topic I will provide more information below:

System: Debian bare-bones (customized), no GUI - just a console based system.

Issue: When I log in as root, before I can begin to do any work I need to type:

cd ..

If I don't I can't view, for example, my "/tftpboot" folder where my PXE setup is currently located

Request: Is there any way that I can have it that when I login as "Root" that I no longer need to type that so that I can just get into work.

I know it's not really a big deal to type this but doing it every time gets quiet annoying specially when I'm rebooting multiple times a day for testing reasons.

Virtualize Win8.1: BIOS + MBR Physical Partition > to > WIM Image > to > UEFI GPT VHD

Virtualize Win8.1: BIOS + MBR Physical Partition > to > WIM Image > to > UEFI GPT VHD

Virtualizing Win8.1 from BIOS + MBR Physical Partition > to > .WIM Image > to > UEFI GPT .VHD

Sometime last year I found out about Native boot VHDs and tried to go that way for good. There were some issues with hardware and OS (Win7 at the time) not working out and lot of new things that I was learning about VHDs.

Anyways, that confusion, learning and failure led to a better path :)

So this 2015, I figured out how to get VHDs (with Fresh Win 8.1 Installs via Install.WIM DISM Apply Image) to Native Boot on Surface Pro 3 (Sp3).

I am going to attempt doing the following steps using DISM/ ImageX:

MBR [Customized Win 8.1] (Physical) > Create Image > [Customized Win 8.1 .WIM] (Virtual - File based so - No sectors or MBR/GPT?? ).

[Customized Win 8.1 .WIM] (Virtual) > Apply Image > [Empty New GPT .VHD] (on SP3)

My thought is that by going to .WIM I bypass the whole converstion drama between MBR/BIOS & GPT/UEFI as the .WIM is agnostic of both of them? Is this a valid thought or not?
Thoughts?

NOTE: I can.. try out the above with creating a small FRESH MBR Windows 8.1 partition on X61T/ T61 and then doing the above 2 steps. Convert it to a .WIM and then applying to a GPT .VHD

I am guessing a SYSPREP is recommended somewhere in between.
Someone somewhere also mentioned doing Sysprep in a VM/ Hyper V instead?

Thoughts? Where and how would you recommend applying the SYSPREP?
