DISM Error : 21 Device Not ready error

Hello,

I'm having a little trouble diagnosing a DISM Error. It's persisting after a reboot, and google turns up a lot of nothing.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism /cleanup-wim
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Error: 21
The device is not ready.

The log tells me a lot of nothing too.

Anyone encountered this Error : 21 ?

Can we speak "MAC" here ? ;)

Hi, here's my next lil' challenge -

I was successful using this post of Shirin, to Run BartPE from Hard at boot time on a WinTel box.
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4866

[i'm making this new post here so it can be more easily seen, plz move if necessary Thanks :(]

With that confidence, I thought I'd love that same advantage on a Boot Camp installation.

But, ultimately run into error < Process1_Initialization_Failed >

[ And, I understand that my "problem" is coming from the "boot-time family feud" between GUID & MBR :smiling9: ]

Scenario = 9 month old MacBook Pro, w/ a "creative" install / partition method ---->

*Using Disk Utility of Snow Leopard Install DVD,
established 4 partitions after performing a full Disk Erase/Verify-Repair disk.

- remember that (dev1) is the special EFI partition Apple/Intel claims for itself,
and is "technically" the 1st partition,
but "functionally" in my definition, the 1st partition will be Snow Leopard -

Quote

1st partition (dev2) = HFS Extended Journaled, ultimately Snow Leopard installed here

2nd partition (dev3) = set to HFS Extended Journaled only until XPsp3.Pro is installed on (dev4)
................................... (because XP will install himself on the 1st partition he finds that has a familiar file-system)
................................... this will become a Fat32 DATA partition between SnowLeo & XP

3rd partition (dev4) = DOS/FAT - installed XPsp3.Pro here as the 1st install,
................................... format to NTFS during install

4th partition (dev5) = HFS Extended Journaled for "Mac_BAK" -
................................... a DATA partition for SnowLeo on the "other side" where XP can't see it

Next, install XPsp3.Pro to what -he- sees as the 4th, and LAST, partition [DOMINANCE! :( ] -
because we know that being M$, he's "funny" like that

- then install "Boot Camp" for the drivers

{recalling that "Boot Camp" is really 2 things -

.....1) a partitioning method (which I don't need, 'cause I'm more creative than that
plus, I want to separate my OS from my DATA - 'cause I know too well that Macs eventually kak

.....2) a collection of the drivers necessary to run XP in Mac}

Next, reboot w/ SnowLeo Install DVD, use Disk Utility to erase partition 2 (dev3) & reformat as DOS/FAT -
it actually formats it as Fat32. Now I have a Win_DATA partition in between SnowLeo & XP.

Next, install SnowLeo on 1st partition.

Then, I find that I can SUCCESSFULLY make, & RESTORE!, an image of XP using Drive Snapshot from my BartPE boot -

(well, i know - give me another week or so experimenting with my WinBuilders,
and soon i'll be a full practicing member of this wonderful Boot-Land church :(

I store the image on the 2nd partition, Win_DATA, and successfully Restore the image!

Man, am I Happy to finally achieve this! - separating DATA from OS running XP on Mac,
plus a separate partition on the same hdd to store sytem images !

(of course i copied the image to another 2 hdds for extra backup safety as well)

*Next, perform Shirin's method to hopefully boot a PE from hdd - but after the method,
when attempting to boot, I get the Blue Screen error :

Process1_Initialization_Failed
0X0000006B (0XC000003A, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

...... so, can anyone help?

may-be we can tweak the script somehow to allow a peaceful "marriage"
between the native GUID environment, and this method that is intended for MBR ?

thx very much!

Where to change your Source DVD's Timezone?

I know this topic has been done to death but I still have one program that can somehow see the Source CD's timezone of PST.

Where and what should I change on my Source disk to make it look like it came from somewhere other than California?

All my time zones / date and time are correct and spot on, except for this one program that thinks it's 18 hours behind.

ressdeep is an implementation of the SpamSum/ssdeep algorithm originally created by Andrew Tridgell and later adapted to the context of files as ssdeep (http://ssdeep.sourceforge.net/) by Jesse Kornblum

This algorithm allows to compare two files and provide a percentage value that ranks their similarity. Particularly useful when comparing text files that only differ a few bytes, where traditional algorithms such as MD5 or SHA1 would provide a negative match. In some cases, this algorithm is also useful to detect variations of malware or variations of known files.

For me, the best analysis/description of the advantages, disadvantages and improvements of this algorithm are described by Frank Breitinger series of papers on this matter (one example): https://www.fbi.h-da...nger_ICDF2C.pdf

On this tool you find two advantages:
- A graphical user interface instead of plain command line
- A version that is based on Java, meaning that runs well on Windows, Linux, MacOSX for x64 and x86 CPU machines

The website virustotal provides ssdeep hashes on processed files. NIST provides 8 million ssdeep hashes at no cost. I will later be adding the NIST data directly available at http://filename.pro for your convenience.

note: To run in Linux/MacOS, please type from the command line:
java -jar ressdeep.exe

There are no plans at the moment to add a command line interface, for this purpose please refer to the ssdeep tool provided by Jesse Kornblum or to the PHP version by Simon Holywell: http://blog.simonhol...g-php-extension

how to activate 'private' network profile in Win7PE?

I have been trying to make a customized winpe by adding windows 7 components to the official winpe 3.1 image. By now I have enabled most services and programs, the device manager can scan for hardware change and install drivers on-the-fly, plug and play works just like windows 7, and network autoconfig (dot3svc) connect winPE to my network once the NIC driver is installed. However, there are some problems:

the network is only recognized as "public" network, and shown in the name of 'Network' instead of the real network name 'linksys'. In public mode I can access internet and map network drives, but Network Discovery is turned off and cannot be turned on no matter what. Upon connection I DO get the prompt box to choose among 'home network', 'business network' and 'public network', but only the public network works. If I choose 'home network', it will try for quite some time and then always fail ("windows could not set the network settings"). What do I have to do or add to persuade it to apply the 'private' network profile? I have Ipv6 working as well as Ipv4.

Another related issue -- when I dynamically load the NIC driver in devmgr, I automatically got connected without a problem, the ipconfig /all shows everything fine, got both Ipv6 and v4 address, the DNS server , subnet mask and the DNS suffix are all correct, except:

DHCP Enabled ...................................: NO <-------- this should be YES, as on other full win7 machines
.........................
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled <-------------- this should be Enabled

Of course I can change it later in "change adaptor settings" after the connection has been made, but is there a way to have these two ON by default whenever a connection is made? The NetBIOS and NetBT services are running all the time, as well as DHCP service.

My major purpose to build this winPE (and to ask questions here) is to learn, so I dont need a canned script.

TIA

grub4dos in webboot enviroment

Hi guys,

after I could use grub4dos, to boot a Win7PE.iso from a webserver, I was trying to boot a Live-CD-Ubuntu.iso with grub.

Scenario: iPXE -> pxelinux (from http) -> grub (from http) -> iso (from http)

Problem: After loading grub, there is nothing to select, grub is complaining about invalid partition table. With the winpe I didn't get this problem because the ISO was added as initrd. As far as I've read the working setup for ubunto isos, the iso has to be added another way, indeed he would not load the iso because it is too big when added as initrd.

Should I load grub before pxelinux?

Any help would be appreciated, especially how to access http with grub.

Settings:
Latest iPXE git
PXELINUX 4.05
grub4dos 0.4.5.c

ShutdownPE

I just downloaded this project. Enabled ShutdownPE and it is failing that it will only run on x64.
In the code for ShutdownPE, arch is set to x86|x64, so it should not matter if it is x86 or x64. Also the zip has x86 and x64 versions of ShutdownPE.exe

Code for arch_check:
[Arch_check]
If,#1,Equal,,Echo,"Using Arch YOU MUST DEFINE Architecture supported by script. Parameter missing",WARN
If,#1,Equal,,Exit,"Using Arch YOU MUST DEFINE Architecture supported by script. Parameter missing"If,#1,Equal,,Set,%arch%,x86
If,#1,Equal,off,Set,%arch%,%SourceArch%
StrFormat,POS,%arch%,|,%multiarch%
If,%multiarch%,Equal,0,Begin
If,Not,EXISTVAR,%TargetWOW64%,Set,%TargetWOW64%,%SourceArch%
If,%arch%,Equal,x86,If,Not,%TargetWOW64%,Equal,x86,Exit,"%ProgramTitle% requires WOW64 for PE %SourceArch%"
If,%arch%,Equal,x64,If,Not,%SourceArch%,Equal,x64,Exit,"%ProgramTitle% can only run on PE x64"
If,%arch%,Equal,IA64,If,Not,%SourceArch%,Equal,IA64,Exit,"%ProgramTitle% can only run on PE IA64"
End
Else,Begin
StrFormat,POS,%arch%,%SourceArch%,%multiarch_test%
If,%multiarch_test%,Equal,0,Exit,"%ProgramTitle% requires different source architecture than current %SourceArch%"
End
Set,%arch%,%arch%,GLOBAL

From what I can see %arch% is not set before the StrFormat so shouldn't that line read:
StrFormat,POS,#1,|,%multiarch%

I also don't see where %arch% is being set for the if statements below the StrFormat command.

How to automatically prevent creation of $Recycle.Bins & SVI folders?

0
0
Hi,

one thing that really bothers me, is the automatic creation of the Windows objects $Recycle.Bin and System Volume Information, an even bigger annoyance than the cr**py My Documents innovation.

Using a Win7PESE build, I do not want to get these objects being (re-)created on every drive and partition I access.

I'm searching methods ("hacks", whatever...) to tell Windows/Win7PESE:
  • not to create any $Recycle.Bin/$RECYCLE.BIN objects at all; never, for noone
  • to delete files and folders immediately, not using any Recycler (maybe via NukeOnDelete)
  • if necessary, to set any Recycler size to 0 MB
  • to globally disable the System Restore service/functionality
  • if feasible somehow, not to create any System Volume Information objects
  • not to protect any of these objects if found, enabling me to remove them
According to some rumors I found a couple of registry values, such as

Quote

RegWrite,HKLM,0x4,"Tmp_Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore",DisableSR,1
RegWrite,HKLM,0x4,"Tmp_Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects\{0E62E162-BDED-4E74-88F1-EE99FD717DEB}Machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore",DisableSR,1

dealing with System Restore or

Quote

RegWrite,HKLM,0x4,Tmp_Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket,NukeOnDelete,1
RegWrite,HKLM,0x4,Tmp_Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer,NoRecycleFiles,1

for Recycler settings, but that didn't get me further.

Has anybody already tried to achieve this? Maybe forensic folks out there...?
I do not want to mount a host system read only as I'm running my backup programs in Win7PESE, but I want to prevent the PE build to tamper with the host and external (NTFS formatted) hdds...

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Dynamic Bootmenu possible?

0
0
Hi!

A few days ago, I watched a modding-Video on youtube. The Guy had built a system which contains Windows, Linux and OSX (imho). A Module called EFI-X seemed to create a dynamic built Boot-Menu by parsing through the Installed Drives and automatically creating a Boot-Menu.

Today, I'm smarter about that EFI-X thing, and it looks like it's nothing more than a scam, but I'm not in that position to judge about that.

However, it is sometimes helpful to have all installed OSes avaliable on your boot menu, so my question is:

Is it possible with grub4dos or some (probably free) image to integrate a dynamic boot menu which displays all OSes on the installed drives into my multiboot-drive?

A easy to read tutorial would be preferred, but I'm also willing to spend hours in reading through sites.

Yet another driver handling question

Hey all,

Both the PENetworks script and the DriverPacks script have their own repository.

I assume most of us want to jam pack network drivers into our builds. Should one just shove all there Network drivers into the PENetwork repository, or its it better to have them in the DriverPacks Repository?

I guess it's just what ever you like really. Might make it my practice to use the DriverPack in PENetwork's rep.

No point doubling up right?

Drive swapping options in Grub4Dos?

0
0
Hi All,

I have a need for some strange mappings.

Background:
I have a physical floppy and drive. The floppy has a program that deals with encryption. If I use the Physical Floppy Drive and Physical Floppy, everything works properly.

I used WinMerge to make an IMA file from the Physical floppy. Now I can get the program to run and work to a certain extent, it trys to perform the modifications on the wrong drive. Instead of performing the task on Disk 0, it's looking at Disk 1 and seeing that there's nothing to work on.

I googled some grub entries and read about the drive swapping options, but I can't get it to boot.

I did notice that the floppy is using "On Time RTOS-32 4.0 Disk Loader"

Below was my last effort.

title Emergency Floppy
map (hd0,0)/Boot/IMG/Emergency.IMA (fd0)
map (hd1,0)+1 (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map --hook
chainloader (hd0,0)/io.sys
rootnoverify (hd0)
boot
Other things to note are that I'm using a USB drive that's formatted using NTFS.

Is my problem compounded by booting from a USB drive and even one that's formatted in NTFS?

I'm not getting an errors with the formatting, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Anyone got any clues?

Hi All,
I wonder does have anyone tried to look on way to include FreeBSD Distros as supported on Xboot. This would be very usefull in case of multiple LiveCD NAS images (NAS4Free, FreeNAS, ...)?

Best Regards,

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had a script to add AVG Free 2012 into Win7PE?

I tried to search for AVG but couldn't find anything. I couldn't find any portable apps either.

If there is no script already would there be any tips for trying to add AVG?
